"Im like a seed planted
in the dirt, feels like ive been
waiting forever to grow, and
maybe today is the day, or
maybe tonight is the night. One
thing that I know for sure, this
time im gonna get it right"
The seed is a symbol that is frequently used in the play "Death of a Salesman". Willy expects so much of his sons, he has put in so much time and effort to get them on the right path however his efforts go to waste. His sons Biff and Happy are not capable of following in the footsteps of their father, they believe that Willy has been living a lie his entire life, he never did what he wanted instead he did what he was told to do. In Act 2, there is a section in the play where Willy is planting seeds in his garden, the seeds represent his sons, the fact that they have not grown yet, and it seems like they never will. I chose this song because it represents the lives of Biff and Happy. they wish to please their father, but they refuses to live a life not worth living, because of this they are still seeds, just waiting their chance to change and begin growing. This song also very well represents the symbolism of the seeds that was expressed throughout the play.
Bored out of mind i need a ******* Job But they aint hiring shit thats why I ****ing Rob
This song best symbolizes Biffs life in general. Biff cant seem to be able to choose between what will make him happy and what will make everyone around him happy. He wants to please his father, but at the same time he does not want to follow in his path. As the readers, we are clearly aware of Biffs habit of stealing. We are told that every job that he gets, he ends up stealing and never goes back. I chose this song because I believe it best represents Biffs life, it provides an example as to why Biff steals and what may be going through his mind. The song provides us with a explanation as to why Biff is having a hard time making decisions, this song unlocks the true complexity of his character.
When you try your best but you dont succeed, when you get what you want but not what you need, when you feel so tired but you cant sleep...stuck in reverse..
Willy followed in the footsteps of his father, he wants his sons to do the same. Willy wants his sons to represent his name in the business world and to become successful (live the american dream). I chose this song because I believe that it represents Willy's attempt at attaining the american dream. "When you try your best but you dont succeed", Willy put all he could together and tried to achieve the best for his family, in the end he never succeeded and his life began to plummet. The motif of "fix you" in this song represents Willy's sons attempts at trying to fix the problems that have arisen. Both Biff and Happy try to attempt things that they think will help reduce the problem, however they have not yet found the solution.
Tired of being what you want me to be, feeling so faithless lost under the surface. Dont know what youre expecting of me, put under the pressure of walking in your shoes. Every step that I take is another mistake to you
This song represents Biffs thoughts. Through the analysis of Biffs behavior and actions, it is clear that he is not interested in following in his fathers path. Biff and Willy are almost always arguing, Biff does not seem to comprehend what exactly Willy expects from him. To Biff, it seems as if no matter what he does, it never pleases his father because his father continuously compares him with others, stating that his actions are mistakes. Biff believes that he would be happier doing what he wants rather than doing what his father wants, he also realizes that the revival of his family is in his control, this causes a dilemma.
Biff becomes agitated with his fathers behavior, however he continues to attempt to please him only for the revival of his family.
"Tired of being what you want me to be.."
She hate me when I leave because when I leave I never call her
This song represents Happys personality. Throughout the play, Happy spends a lot of time talking with and about women. Through the analysis of his actions, we can inquire that he is a ladies man. At one point in the story, his lust for women overcame his love for his own father, in act 2 Happy left his father at the restaurant just to be with the model. This action reveals a lot about his character, however it reveals a more darker side rather than bright.
"I’m seeing ghosts
everywhere I turn, there you float
and you are more than beautiful, but I’ve gotta let you, I’ve gotta let you go"
This stanza in the song is relevant because when Willy has his daydreams, they are often of better, happier, more successful times where nothing had gone wrong and everything was just the way it was supposed to be. Although the time was more beautiful, the lies are starting to come down and life his life is spiraling so he has to let the dreams go. Unfortunately, he instead follows one of his hallucinations to his death.
Scene: When Willy has delusions about events that happen in his life.
Scene: Willy cheating on Linda with an office secretary.
Seeing ghosts - Rosi Golan
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac
"Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say... Women... they will come and they will go When the rain washes you clean... you'll know"
Willy cheated on Linda because of the fact that he was lonely on the road; meaning that he only used the secretary for his own momentary pleasure. Who knows how many women he had slept with while "lonely" on the road. No matter what, only Linda, the true wife, could truly put willy's heart at peace by forgiving him. The poor woman never caught wind of what had happened. This stanza accurately portrays the solution to Willy's problem.
Theme: The American Dream
Song: "American Land" by Bruce Springsteen
This song generally talks about the many opportunity available in America.
"Over there all the woman wear silk and satin to their knees And children dear, the sweets, I hear, are growing on the trees
Gold comes rushing out the river straight into your hands
If you make your home in the American land"
There was an idea planted that in America, everything was set up for you if only you are willing to come for it.
"Dear I hear that beer flows through the faucets all night long
There's treasure for the taking, for any hard working man
Who will make his home in the American land"
This quote represents most of Willy's ideals. Only if you work hard in the widely believed "great"
nation of America," you would be successful and everything would be lined up for you. This
state of mind is arguably what caused him to stress out and slowly lose him mind because if
his frustration on the matter of his inability to bring in as much revenue as he had fantasized
Drake - Successful
"I want the money,
Money and the cars,
Cars and the clothes,
I just wanna be,
I just wanna be
This quote in essence is the dream of everyone in America or everywhere in the world for that matter.
Willy and Happy both have an idea of the success in their lives. Willy knows he's going to die soon and
his success is to have many people at his wedding; showing that he's a successful and well liked man.
Happy wants to be the big boss. He wants to be recognized everywhere and have money and girls and
power. In a way, they both want money and everything that comes with the money. This success is only
Bob marley - Dont worry Be happy
The play is centered on trying to be successful or trying to be happy, and the sacrifice which must be made of one to achieve the other. The environment that these characters live in encourages them to
pursue the American dream, which can be said to devalue happiness through the pursuit of material
success. Willy Loman puts his family through endless torture because of his search for a successful life.
Willy, Biff, and Happy are chasing the American dream instead of examining themselves to find what will make themselves happy. This song talks about true happiness and disvalues material possessions. The only character who shows true happiness in what she does is Linda. Her only trouble is the concern for her husband but other than that, she's just joyful for her life.
"Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got not girl to make you smile
But don't worry be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy (now)..... "
