Internet, Culture, and You Culture The quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. Development or improvement of the mind by education or training. A particular instance of personally encountering or undergoing something The process or fact of personally observing, encountering, or undergoing something Knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what one has observed, encountered, or undergone The totality of the cognitions given by perception; all that is perceived, understood, and remembered. Experience Ways of knowing Sense Perception Reason Emotion Language The ability for our bodies to interpret information from the outside world The ability for our minds to rationalize
information into objective knowledge The subjective interpretation of knowledge The process of conveying knowledge, and
the ability to process conveyed information
into knowledge Knowledge Question To what extent can technology provide a cultural experience? "I’m waiting for the day when if you tell someone ‘I’m from the internet’, instead of laughing they just ask ‘oh, what part?’" -Randall Munroe How does Gaming create an experience? Sense Perception Games exist based mostly on what
we, the player, can see or hear within
the game itself. This can be done by limiting
the viewable area To the first-person, as in this
screenshot from Halo 3 Or to the third-person, as in this
screenshot from Mass Effect Or by impairing the sense
perception of the player The darkness in Amnesia: The Dark Descent prevents the player from having full knowledge of what is happening Some games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare use flashbang effects to impair the vision and hearing of enemy players Gaming experiences are often linked to the sense perception of the player in the real world Some companies have started making
equipment to help with perception for
gaming Such as Tritton's gaming glasses Or SteelSeries' gaming
headphones Reason Gaming exists as a medium
that poses challenges that can only
be overcome by reasoning. Portal is a puzzle game based around
manipulating portals to reach objectives
and bypass hazards. The only way to "know"
the game is to reason your way around the
puzzles. Physics-based puzzle games like World of Goo require you to reason out how objects will behave Emotion Gaming exists as a unique medium of interactive storytelling. This has been shown to create different subjective states of "knowing" a game. In its simplest form, gaming achieves the emotional state of success upon completing challenges "After just a few weeks, the vibrant "swoosh!" of the level-up sound was as fulfilling to me as my child's first word" - Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw on World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Other games challenge the conventional method of story-telling and appeal directly to the morality of the player, challenging what can be known, both about the game, and the player themselves. Spec Ops: The Line outright brings the morality of the player's actions to the forefront. Do you really "know" what is happening? Do your emotions tell you? All of these questions are posed, and the answers are never so simple. The game Journey has a feeling of lonely exploration of a desolate world. The interpretation of what the player sees is completely subjective, and no two people are guaranteed to "know" what has happened the same way. Language Most games communicate with the player by language. This is the most obvious and efficient way of conveying information to the player. Having a character to voice information to the player is common This can range from simple tutorials such as in Settlers of Catan To in-depth and informative dialogue such as in Mass Effect. An important note here is the presence of miscommunication in this game. Sometimes the presence of language in games exists to obscure knowledge - and puzzling one's way through it is the way to understand Paper Mario is notorious for including riddles, where comprehending the language is the only way to proceed Gaming Cultures Eve Corporate Loyalty Guild Wars 2 Ethical Decisions Star Craft II Manners World of Warcraft Lingo NBSI
