Hero's Journey: Catching Fire
By: Riley Hill

Return with the Elixir
Katniss blew up the arena. The hover craft is above her in no time picking her up. When she arrives inside they put her under and fix her up. When she comes too she thinks the Capitol is keeping herself, Peeta, and their allies hostage. She plans on killing Peeta to put him out of his misery but she stumbles apon Haymitch, Finnick, and the game maker, Plutarch. "I bang through the door and stumble into the room. Haymitch, Plutarch, and a very beat-up Finnick sit around a table laid with a meal no one is eating" (Collins 384). They fill her in on the plan she wasn't aloud to know for the games. They tell her she is in a District 13 air craft, and they saved her to be the face of the rebellion against the Capitol. '"We had to save you because you're the mockingjay, Katniss," says Plutarch. "While you live, the rebellion lives." The bird, the pin, the song, the berries, the watch, the cracker, the dress that burst into flames. I am the mockingjay' (386).
The Call to Adventure
If you are a victor of a Hunger Games you are eliminated from the reapings, and all chances of you returning to the games are gone, but this year is a Quarter Quell. The rules always change for a Quell, and this year's rules state that the tributes will be selected from the remaining vict
ors of each district. "On the seventy-fifth anniversary...the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors" (Collins 172). "District 12 has only three victors to choose from. Two male. One female... I am going back into the arena" (173).
The Ordinary World
Katniss Everdeen lives in the victor's village of District 12 after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games. Instead of her life of poverty before the Games, her and her family enjoy the riches that come with being a victor, but Katniss is also hated by the Capitol for her defiance in the Games.
"And here I am with buckets of money..." (Collins 5). "I am so rich and so famous and so hated by the authorities in the Capitol" (7).
Refusal of the call
Katniss is in utter shock. Her worst fear as just came true. She must enter into the arena once more. She cant handle it. She tries to escape to the woods, but the fence is charged, so she breaks into a nearby house in the village and lets it all out.
"I'm at the fence before the hum makes me remember how very trapped I am. The next thing I know I'm on my hands and knees in one of the empty houses in the Victor's Village, but my escape attempt has done nothing to subdue the hysteria inside me. I ball up the front of my shirt, stuff it into my mouth, and begin to scream" (Collins 174).
Any victor of the Hunger Games becomes a mentor to new tributes of their district. When Katniss entered the Hunger Games for the first time Haymitch was her mentor. His job was to help her any way he could to stay alive and win, so when she finally accepts she has to return to the games she seeks him out for help.
"I hurry back into the night and head straight to Haymitch's house" (Collins 176). Katniss wants to make a deal because she knows herself and Peeta wont both make it out this time, "If it is Peeta and me in the Games, this time we try to keep him alive" (178).
Meeting with the Mentor
Crossing the Threshold
Katniss is selected at the reaping to attend the 75th annual Hunger Games. "She has to claw around the girls' reaping ball for quite a while to snag the one piece of paper that everyone already knows has my name on it" (Collins 186).
Test
Before the tributes enter the games they go through a training week where they practice different skills and are given a score by the game makers at the end of the week. "Atla runs through the list of stations, which include both combat and survival skills, and releases us to train" (Collins 225). Haymitch also wants Katniss to make friends so she will have allies. '"That could still make you desirable allies. But only if you let the others know you are willing to team up with them." says Haymitch' (223).
Enemies
When your in the arena everyone becomes your enemy if you want to survive. But Haymitch reminds Katniss why they are all there and the Capitol is the real enemy. '"Katniss when you're in the arena...You just remember who the enemy is, Haymitch tells me"' (Collins 268).
Allies
When Training begins Katniss doesn't want allies, but as the week continues she wants Wiress and Beetee for allies. "Well, Wiress and Beetee are smart. And if we have to have allies, I want them" (Collins 238). When the games begin Katniss figures out that Haymitch made a deal with someone else. "Haymitch gave it to him. As a sign to me. An orger, really. To trust Finnick" (278).

The Reward
The Road Back
Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, Beetee, and Johanna need a plan to take out the remaining two in the career pack. Beetee has his wire and suggest electrocuting the water and killing the career's food supply and possibly shocking them on the beach. They have to attach the wire to the lightning tree and run the wire down to the water before twelve. '"When the bolt strikes, the electricity will travel down the wire and into not only the water but also the surrounding beach, which will still be damp from the ten o'clock wave. Anyone in contact with those surfaces at the moment will be electrocuted, says Beetee"' (Collins 359). While Johanna and Katniss are unraveling the wire to the water, its cut and Katniss gets stuck. Johanna sends her knife into Katniss' arm and tells her to stay down before she takes off. 'There's a stab in my left forearm. I try to jerk away but I'm still too incapacitated. Johanna's digging something, I guess the point of her knife, into my flesh twisting around. She swipes down my arm and coats half my face with my blood. "Stay down!" she hisses' (371). But she doesn't. Katniss scrambles to get up and find Peeta before someone else does. "Peeta! My eyes fly open in panic. Peeta is waiting up by the tree, unsuspecting and off guard" (372).
