Opening hours:

(Reference Department opens at 08:30)

Saturday 09:00 - 12:15
When entering the Library remember:

To leave your bags in a locker or pigeon-hole
That no food or drinks are allowed, however you may bring in water
Free WIFI is available, you just have to log in using your IT services username and password
Photocopying and printing services are available on each floor
You can buy a photocopy card from the Circulation Desk
or Melitensia Department:

•€6 for the first card
•€4.70 every next card

You can use your Smart Card to buy Photocopy Cards.

Printing credits may be purchased directly from IT Services or online via the Manage UoM IT Account facility link.
The Short Loans Department:
The Short Loans Department:

Houses course books which are in heavy demand. The Short Loans has its own circulation desk so books are borrowed and returned in this room

Books cannot be reserved however renewals are possible
A maximum of two books or offprints can be borrowed at any one time
Items can be borrowed for a two-hour period during the day, at which they may be taken out of the Library
Overnight loans may be issued two hours before closing time and due back the following morning between 09:00-09:30
Books borrowed on Saturday as weekend loans are to be returned on Monday between 09:00-09:30
The Periodicals Department:
The Periodicals Department:

Library subscribes to over 60 000 full text electronic journals and 1000 print journals
Journals on Health, Medicine, and Dentistry are available in the Health Sciences Library
Journals with a Maltese element are located in Melitensia Department
Journals and newspapers cannot be borrowed
Online journals can be accessed via e-Library link on the Library website at any time
The Reference Department:
The Reference Department:

Opens at 08:30
It's a silent study area - no group work allowed
The Reference Department houses dictionaries, encyclopaedias, biographies, standards, yearbooks, atlases, bibliographies, indexes and abstracts
Reference works cannot be borrowed
Displays new library books for one week. You may reserve any of these books by filling out the reserve slip and leaving it inside the book
A photocopier and printer are available
The Melitensia Department:
The Melitensia Department is a silent research and study area
It contains books and materials related to Malta
Some books such as novels can be borrowed, however others like newspapers and rare books may be consulted on site
Books must be borrowed and returned to the Melitensia Circulation Desk
Photocopy cards can also be purchased form this Department
The Melitensia Department houses a large collection of print and electronic dissertations
Print dissertations cannot be borrowed and only 10 pages per dissertation can be photocopied
Students can ask for 3 dissertations at any time
Electronic dissertations may be accessed from the workstations inside the Department
Printing and copying facilities (for E-dissertations) are not available
I need a book/article that is only available in foreign library.

How can I get it?
Where can I find issues of journals not held in the Periodicals Department?
Msida Depository:

The Msida Depository accommodates journals covering the years 1977 to 1999.
Health Sciences Depository:

The Health Sciences Depository is located at the old Medical School in St Luke's Hospital, Guardamangia. The Depository houses the print collection of all back issues of journals in Medicine and Nursing, as well as the pre-1965 monographs in every discipline of medicine.
Issues of journals that are not available in the Periodicals Department can be found in:
To obtain a book that is available in a foreign library, fill in the application form for an Interlibrary Loan.
The form may be obtained from the Reference Department or at www.um.edu.mt/library/services2/ods.

Complete it with all the required details, print it and hand it to the librarian in charge of the Reference Department.
Standard BLDSC prices currently stand at:

€32.60 per book loan
To apply for an overseas photocopy of a journal article fill in the application form for Overseas Documents.
The form may be obtained from the Reference Department or at www.um.edu.mt/library/services2/ods.

Complete it with all the required details, print it and hand it to the librarian in charge of the Reference Department.
Standard BLDSC prices currently stand at:

€20.00 per request (VAT included) for journal articles irrespective of pagination
San Gwann Depositories:

San Gwann Depositories accommodates all pre-1971 journals.

To consult material from this depository, kindly fill in the appropriate form and hand it in at the Periodicals Department. Requested journals will be brought to the Periodicals Department for consultation within two or three days after submission of form. This material cannot be borrowed.
Where can I find books that were recently bought by the Library?
New additions to the Library are kept on display on the recent accessions shelves in the Reference Department. The books are kept for one week and may not be borrowed before they are placed on the open shelves. However, these publications may be reserved in advance by filling in a reservation card and inserting it in the requested book. Reservation cards are available on the recent accessions shelves. New books pertaining to the Melitensia Department and Short Loans are shelved immediately in their relevant sections.

How can I carry out my research and request material from the Melitensia Department?
Identify the work(s) from the Library's online or card catalogue and then fill in the Request Form available in the Department.
Most of the Melitensia collection is listed online in the electronic catalogue (OPAC), however there are still older works whose details have not yet been enterned into the database and can be only found through the old card catalogues.
How to carry out research at the Melitensia Department?
The card catalogues are divided into:

Author/Title catalogue prior to 1981
Author/Title catalogue from 1981 to May 1992
Dates refer to the particular year when a book was assigned by the library and not to its dates of publication.
How to request material at the Melitensia Department?

Bighi Library is situated within the Heritage Malta main offices in Kalkara.

Bighi Library houses a special collection of books and journals:
Specialized collection of books and journals on conservation and restoration
Melitensia and History of Art books
Valletta Campus Library:
Valletta Campus Library is situated on St Paul Street in the Old University Building in Valletta.

Valletta Campus Library houses:
Books that support the curriculum and information needs of International Masters Programmes
A unique and rich collection of anthropological and social science works acquired by the Library from Sir Jack Goody and Jeremy Boissevain
Faculty of Arts Library:
The Faculty of Arts Library is situated on the level 2 of Old Humanities Building, Main Campus.

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday 08.30 - 16.30
Saturday Closed

The Library caters for all the Departments in the Faculty of Arts.
It houses books on archaeology, history, languages, literature, theatre, music, philosophy etc.
Junior College Library:
The Junior College Library is situated in the G.F. Abela Junior College in Msida.

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:00
Saturday Closed

The Library, with collections in the arts and sciences, caters for pre-University students following intermediate and advanced matriculation studies.
The Circulation Desk:
The Circulation Desk is one of the key departments of the Library. It is situated on Level 1 near the main entrance of the Library.

The functions of the Circulation Desk include:
Lending and renewing books
Checking returned items
Receiving payment for fines
Answering queries
How many books can I borrow and for how long can I keep them?
How many books can I borrow and how long can I keep them?
Undergraduate and diploma students can borrow up to 6 books for the period of 3 weeks.
Postgraduate students can borrow up to 10 books for the period of 3 months.
You cannot borrow more than 4 books from the Melitensia Department!
I need a book but it is already on loan. Can I reserve it?
How to reserve (request) a book?
If book is on loan, you can
(recall, reserve) it.

Reserving (requesting) books that are out on loan can be done in person at the Circulation Desk or online via My Library Account found at http://www.um.edu.mt/library.

The request will automatically generate an email that will notify patron to return the book within one week. When the book is returned you will be contacted to collect the book within 3 days.

You cannot request books which are on shelf.
I cannot return my books on time. How much will I have to pay?
How much will I have to pay for overdue books?
The fines below apply if you fail to return the Library books on time:
Regular loan (3 weeks or 3 months): €0.20c per day

Recalled (requested) item: €0.50c per day

Restricted loan (Short Loans Department): €0.15c per hour
If you cannot return books on time, you can always ask your family to do it for you!
Do you have any questions?
