Subject vs. Theme A theme is
a revelation about our lives. What
is
theme? Let's look at the subject "government corruption and control" in "The Hunger Games". Theme is what the author has to say about the subject he or she has written about. Stories can have MORE THAN ONE theme! Some themes for "The Hunger Games" could be: BE CAREFUL!!! Don't get too specific with your themes. "Dwarfs are helpful" is too specific to the "Snow White" story. Subjects are one or two words (what is the story about?) Finding meaning
in literature Theme Theme is not subject! Subjects are what the author has chosen to write about. For example, the subject of "The Hunger Games" is dystopian society, government control and corruption, overcoming challenges. Try this! What is the subject of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is about: a beautiful princess community dwarfs an evil queen jealousy Theme is not plot either.
Plot is the series of event within a story. running away What is Suzanne Collins saying about government control and corruption? This is the theme. What Suzanne Collins is likely trying to say is, to quote Lord Acton, Try this! Using the subject "jealousy" for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", what is the theme? How do they eventually end up? How are the jealous characters portrayed? Before you decide on the theme, take a look at "jealousy" within the story. What do they do? Given what we know about the Evil Queen, who was jealous in the story, what is the author trying to tell us about jealousy? Jealousy is a powerful emotion that can destroy lives. This is one of the themes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. A theme is the
truth about life
revealed in
a work of literature. Theme is
a discovery of truth. Theme tends to focus on discoveries about the BIG topics in everyone's life. BIG topics,
like what? understanding the nature of love accepting responsibility understanding loss dealing with ambition discovering the joys and problems of friendship "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Themes aren't specific to the work of literature you're reading, but relevant to all of us. Some themes for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs could be: Teamwork often leads to success Making a difference takes hard work Everyone is their own person and no one belongs to anyone else Too much power can lead to chaos Love conquers all Good triumphs over evil Good people are blessed while bad people are punished "A bow and arrow will help you survive the Hunger Games" is too specific to "The Hunger Games"story "Being evil will turn you into a witch and you'll fall off a cliff" is too specific to "Snow White". "Splitting the country into districts would never work" is too specific to "The Hunger Games". Themes are a phrase or a sentence (what is the author trying to say about the subject?) Subjects love friendship family loss hardship and struggle Themes Love conquers all. Good triumphs over evil. Crime doesn't pay. Sacrifices bring reward. Honesty is the best policy.
