by invading Poland
September 1, 1939 The Soviet Union invades
Poland from the east. The Polish army was not
prepared to fight the German
military. The Poles sent soldiers
on horseback against German tanks. the German Army took control
of half of Poland in 36 days Great Britain and France
declared war on Germany
because Germany invaded Poland. Warsaw after the
Germans invaded. Atlantic Ocean In 1940 Germany invaded
France. France surrendered
in June 1940. Northern France was now under
German Control The Germans defeated
the French and British
in Six Weeks The Vichy government is set
up as a puppet of Germany
to rule Southern France British and French troops
defending France were not
prepared to stop the German
Blitzkrieg (Lightning War) The Blitzkrieg was a new
style of attack using planes
and tanks to quickly defeat
an enemy. Only Great Britain was left
to fight Germany Vichy
France The Battle of Britain (also called the Blitz) failed to force Britain to surrender to the Nazis in Fall 1940. Germany sent planes to destroy
the British Royal Air Force from
July 1940 until October 1940 During this time
London was bombed
every night as Hitler
tried to make the British surrender. But they never did. British people watched for German and
used radar to detect the German Planes Hitler but planned to invade but
he never did because he could not
destroy the Royal Air Force (RAF) Churchill said of the
RAF Pilots:
"Never has so much
been owed by
so many to so few." Hitler violated his
Non-Agression Pact with
Stalin and invaded
the Soviet Union in 1941 Vichy
France The Germans attacked Stalingrad
in August 1942. The Germans were
defeated by the Soviets at Stalingrad
in February 1943. Turning Point of
the War in Eastern Europe In 1943 Germany was
defeated in North Africa
by the Americans & other
allies In 1943 the
Americans & Other
allies invaded Italy. The D-Day Invasion
of Normandy on
June 6, 1944 by the
Americans & other
allies opened a
Second Front
against Germany Germany Americans & the Other Allies invaded Germany March 1945 The Soviets encircled
Berlin April 1945.
Hitler commits suicide
April 1945. Germany Surrenders
May 7-9, 1945 Great Britain
and France
declare war
on Germany
