Color Symbolism: The great gatsby
The color in The Great Gatsby not only gives livelyness to the picures Fitzgerald paints with words, but also symbolizes much deeper meanings in the novel.
Attention-grabbing, liveliness, optimism, summer, happiness, artificial gold/fake
Jay Gatsby's car was yellow, yellow cocktail music at Gatsby's party
quotes: Tom to Wilson "That Yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn't mine- do you hear? I haven't seen it all afternoon." The car is a symbol of wealth, but it's bright yellow which symbolizes fake gold (richness). Gatsby tried to fit in with the old money, but he just seemed fake. Also, yellow is attention grabbing, and his car was how Wilson recognized him. The car can also represent the optimism of that summer for Gatsby, his dreams for Daisy and him.
" ... and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music..." The music at Gatsby's party was yellow once again representing the falseness of his wealth. It also is very lively and seems to brighten the party.
wealth, prosperous, valuable
quotes: The reunion of Gatsby and Daisy " An hour later the front door opened nervously, and Gatsby, in a white flannel suit, silver shirt, and gold-color tie, hurried in." (pg 84) Gatsby wears a golden tie because Daisy comes from a golden world (old money) and so Gatsby feels he must fit in.
Jordan and Nick " ... I put my arm around Jordan's golden shoulder and drew her toward me and asked her to dinner." (pg 79) Jordan comes from old money, and to Nick, who thinks he is in love, she is valuable.
Daisy is the golden girl, the prize what both Gatsby and Tom wanted. She was sought after by many men because she was beautiful and deemed valuable.
Reliability, luxurious, optimism, hope, calm
The light at the end of Daisy's dock
Quotes: Gatsby talking to Daisy "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock."(pg 92) The light also represents the luxury that Daisy has had all her life, and the luxury the American dream promises.
"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us."(pg 180) The green represents Gatsby's dream, the American dream, with the girl (Daisy), the money, the house, the job. The dream he has through out the entire book, until she turns out the green light.
neutral, dull, lifeless
The Valley of Ashes, Wilson, all of the people in the V of A
Quotes: " a line of gray cars... the ash-gray men..." (pg 23) Everyone in the valley of ashes is dull, working people. They never go to parties or have fun. Wilson is gray, and Myrtle is gray until she is with Tom.
" About half way between West Egg and New York... is the valley of ashes..." (pg 23) The valley of ashes is like this neutral place between the two lively, party places. A place you don't want to stop in.
Heavenly, loyal, depression
The eyes of T.J. Eckleburg, many things in Gasby's home/life
Quotes from TGG
" The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and giganic..." (23) The eyes represent the eyes of god watching all of the people sin.
" A chauffeur in a uniform of robin's-egg blue crossed my lawn early Saturday morning..." (41) Gatsby's chauffeur was loyal to him, he was the only person Gatsby didn't fire. Also the chauffeur found Gatsby after he had been shot.
Although a lot of people are in and around his house, his gardens are blue. "... ghostly birds began to sing among the blue leaves..." (144) Gatsby's life is full of blue, which represents his unhappy, unfulfilled life.
virginity, purity, innocence
Daisy's car and dress when she was young, Daisy's and Jordan's dresses the first time nick meets them, Daisy's white face when Gastby kissed her
quotes: " She dressed in white, and had a little white roadster..."(pg 74) When Gatsby first met Daisy, she was innocent and pure.
" They were both in white..." (pg 8) Jordan and Daisy wore white because they still had some innocents, but then Daisy broke Gatsby's heart, and ruined his life.
" His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own." (pg 110) They were both innocent at this point, this was the first time they kissed.
