HOT AIR BALLOONS HOT AIR BALLOONS HISTORY SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES Test Flight By Trent Herrera, Ethan Masucol and Ryan Fowler Hot Air Balloons are the oldest successful aeronautic design.
The first unmanned balloons were the Kongming lanterns and the Nazca Lines balloons.
Joseph Michel Montgolfier filled a silk bag with air in his house, and it rose up to his ceiling. This proved that flight with hot air balloons was possible.
The first manned balloon was the Montgolfier balloon created by Joseph Michel Montgolfier. It's first tethered flight, a flight with people aboard, was on October 15, 1783. It was then used in the French military as an observation post at the Battle of Fleurus (1794).
These people discovered the principle that hot air would rise above cool air and/or light air would rise above dense air. Warm air rises above cooler air. Parachute Valve The particles in the air collide with other particles and push on each other with a tiny force of energy. There are so many particles in the air that there is enough energy to create air pressure levels. Due to gravity, particles are more compacted closer to the ground, creating a denser pressure level. The farther you get from the surface of the Earth, the less dense the pressure levels get. The difference in pressure levels creates an upward buoyant force that propels the balloon upward. BUOYANCY The warmer the air, the greater the lift is. If the lift is greater than the weight of the balloon, it will go up. If it is equal, it will stay level. And if it's less, it will descend. Right now, hot air balloons are primarily being used in the tourism business and meteorology study. Hot air balloons in tourism go on African Safaris and City Overviews Weather Balloons are used to measure air pressure and temperatures The future of luxury air travel may be through luxury hot air balloons. The project "AirCruise" will offer wealthy passengers stunning views of cities while at the same time getting them to their destination. TYPES AND EXAMPLES Montgolfier - Basic hot air balloon, air inside envelope heated to let balloon gain lift

Solar - Envelope is shaded a very dark color, traps sun's energy to heat air inside

Hybrid - Hot air balloon that gains lift by ejecting a lighter than air gas into the envelope to gain lift, primarily helium.
