Ions and bonding
all you need to know!
An ion is a charged particle.
Atoms want to have FULL outermost energy levels to be stable.
But not all atoms have full outermost energy levels.

Some have just a few valence electrons (or even one!), and some have almost enough, but not quite.

What's an atom to do!?!?!?
If an atom has just one or two valence electrons, it can do one of two things...
It can give it away to another atom that really, really wants it...


It can share it with another ion.
So??? How do I know what kind of ion an atom will make??
Oh, that's easy.

If an atom loses an electron that means one of its negatively charged particles has been taken away.

The ion will end up having a positive charge...because now it has more plusses than minuses!!
What if an atom gets MORE electrons??
That's easy too!! You are adding on more negative charges, so the charge on the ion will be negative!!

Different types of salts have different crystal structures. Cations and anions can have more than one unit of positive or negative charge if they lose or gain more than one electron. In this fashion, many different kinds of salts are possible.
