Bluetooth What is Bluetooth? Invented by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson in 1994
Wireless networking technology

2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz
Low interference due to weak (1mw) signal
Signal range of 10ft
Spread-spectrum frequency hopping SSFH A method of transmitting radio signals by switching carriers between channels
Using a pattern that both the transmitter and receiver understand
Because of constant carrier change between 79 different channels interference is unlikely
If there is interference it lasts shortly because the channel switches 1,600 times a second Service level security
Security Connection Process Each Bluetooth device has an address given by the manufacturer
When Bluetooth is turned on in a device it automatically sends out a radio-signal looking for an address in a compatible range
If any devices have an address in that range they respond and a piconet is formed
Sometimes in order to gain access a password or code is required Master- Slave Structured Protocol 1 master can communicate with up to 7 slaves
All slave clocks are base on the master's clock
At a given time a master can transfer data with one device.
A master and slave may agree to switch roles (phone and a headset)
Piconets connected can become Scatternets in which devices can play both the role of slave and master at the same time
Device level security Authentication is required when a device wants to connect
Device is not guarded against accessing any part of the phone once authenticated Devices have to be authorized for specific services
Each device is not authenticated These two security levels combine to make a secure connection Bluetooth Security Problems Early viruses used the automatic connection to spread viruses by just walking by. Bluejacking Bluebugging Car Whispering A malicious user sends a contact card via bluetooth
The user accepts because it is just a contact number
The user can often now automatically connect to their phone via bluetooth Requests connection to device (similarly to above)
Once connected manipulates user into creation of a back door
Now can program for call forwarding or future data forwarding Software which allows users to send and receive audio from a bluetooth enabled car speakers Why is it called ? Bluetooth is named after a Danish Viking King
The King's name was Harald Blatand
This Viking King was responsible for converting the Danish tribes from the Norse gods to Christianity
He was famous for uniting the different tribes into a single kingdom
Blatand translated to English means Bluetooth
Bluetooth allows the uniting of very different technologies
The logo is the king's initials in Norse Runes put together What is it used for? Phone to Phone
