To the River by Edgar Allan Poe
In-depth Analysis
Music
Song: Electric Feel by MGMT
Initial Response
To the River by Edgar Allan Poe
Fair River! In thy bright, clear flow
of crystal, wandering water.
Thou art an emblem of the glow
of beauty-the unhidden heart,
The playful maziness of art
In old Alberto's daughter.

But when within thy wave she looks
which glistens then, and trembles
Why, the prettiest of brooks
Her worshiper resembles;
For in his heart, as in thy stream,
her image deeply lies-
His heart which trembles at the beam
of her soul-searching eyes.

An Analysis by D'Nadre Bell
Background
Written in 1828
Romantic period
Edgar was in his late teens early 20's
Just entered the army

One of his favorite things (Edgar) was rivers.
Who is Alberto??
The poem is about a guy who loves this girl so he compares her to a river.
Poe: "Fair River! In thy bright, clear flow, of Crystal, wandering water"

Dre: Rivers are cute. You can see throw them.

Poe: "Thou art an emblem of the glow, of beauty- the unhidden heart"

Dre: You're a dime and you know it.

Poe: "The playful maziness of art in old Alberto's Daughter.

Dre: She's a tease. And her daddy's got a funny name.
Poe: "But when within thy wave she looks. Which glistens then and trembles.
"

Dre: She looks in the mirror and is like "DAAANNGG I'm fine".

Poe: "Why then the prettiest of brooks her worshiper resembles."

Dre: She's even got all the other dimes hatin'

Poe: For in his heart, as in thy stream, her image deeply lies

Dre: She's stuck inside dude's head.

Poe: "His heart which trembles at the beam of her soul searching eyes."

Dre: She must be tired cause she's been running through his mind all day.
Style:
The poem is more informal
Short but deep
Wordy
...The playful maziness of art in old Alberto's daughter..."
Created a lot of visual imagery
"...In they bright, clear flow..."
.....which glistens and trembles..."
Tone:
Longing; Wanting
"For in his heart......Her image deeply lies..."
Figure of speech:
3rd person
"....within thy wave SHE looks...."
All along the western front
People line up to receive
She got the power in her hand
To shock you like you won't believe
Saw her in the amazon
With the voltage running through her skin
Standing there with nothing on
She gonna teach me how to swim

I said ooh girl
Shock me like an electric eel
Baby girl
You turn me on with your electric feel
I said ooh girl
Shock me like an electric eel
Baby girl
Turn me on with your electric feel

All along the eastern shore
Put your circuits in the sea
This is what the world is for
Making electricity
You can feel it in your mind
Oh you can do it all the time
Plug it in and change the world
You are my electric girl
