On a sheet of paper write down the answer to this question:
*Why is it important to have a good first impression?
First impressions are important because they set the standard/image of who you are to other people immediately. Moreover, first impressions determine whether or not someone will want to know more about you.
Objective:
1. Students will engage in CMT test strategies to complete a cloze reading passage.
2. Students will identify and define an introductory paragraph.
3. Students will analyze example introductory paragraphs for effectiveness by determining whether or not they contain the three essential parts.
Example #1:

The other day when I was walking to school, I saw a street cleaner sit in the truck while his partner did all of the work.  Both of those people were getting paid.  People need to take street cleaning more seriously.  Street cleaning is important because it decreases the pollution, it gives our city a better look, and it increases employment.

Body Paragraph
The body of the essay....
Do Now: 1/10
Your advisory is thinking of making everyday game day. What do you think? TTQA!! (3 min)
Once, I ate taki's every day for a week: breakfast, lunch and dinner. I soon grew weary of the treat and began to resent it to the point where I could eat it no longer. Too much of anything is not good for you. This includes games. Even though games have been around since the dawn of man and can be very entertaining, too much foolery can become tiring. Games are fun but in moderation. Therefore, I argue that advisory should only have game day once a week because games will be a luxurious rarity, they will motivate students to work hard during the week and having games once a week will allow more time for academics and journals during advisory.
Objective:
1. Students will review the 3 part/punches for a 'knockout' introductory paragraph.
2. Students will identify and determine the parts of an effective body paragraph by analyzing effective body paragraphs using the rubric of TIEE.
TIEE Notes
The topic sentence gives the main idea of the paragraph.
Shows audience awareness and/or transitions.
Instruction of evidence: Gives credentials or the source of the evidence.
Evidence: Anecdotes, Facts and Statistics, Expert Opinion
Explanation: Bridge/connect back to the argument or comment on evidence.
Example #1 Body Paragraph
Mr. Taylor, you must save the Windham Middle School sport’s program, first and foremost, to preserve the outdoor classroom; the field and the court are the ideal place to learn lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship. Recently, USA Today ran an article describing the overwhelming benefits of middle school sports programs. The article stated, “…manners and discipline are lost on this generation. The beacon of hope: intramural sports.” The article continues to outline several examples of schools previously considered at the bottom of the barrel making a dramatic transformation. One such school is the Lyman School of Windsor Locks, CT. According to the same article, up until the announcement of their new basketball team, theft and graffiti were considered extra-curricular activities. Now, the school boasts as one of the cleanest, well-mannered schools in the state. This is, in large part, due to the lesson learned on the court: give a 100 percent, think of everyone on the team, there are no real losers if you try. These are the lessons, I am sure, you want your scholar’s to learn.

While I recognize the benefits of the arts, the amount of money it costs to provide daily art supplies or instruments to the orchestra is far more than that needed to support intramural sports. Mr. Taylor, the equipment of a basketball team is a ball. The equipment required for a soccer team is a ball. According to a Toys R US catalog, a basketball costs twenty-four dollars. Ms. Masciarelli, the current Amistad Orchestra teacher and teacher for 7 years said, “The instruments of the orchestra range from one-hundred twenty-five dollars for a violin to two-hundred for a cello.” This difference is staggering and means a more money for other necessary programs. Additionally, the sports programs require little up-keep monetarily. Lacrosse sticks, once purchased last a good ten or so years. Art supplies dry-up, run out, and are trashed very quickly. With budget cuts looming, it only makes sense to let the dollar speak, and this dollar is saying sports is the better investment.

It is not enough to be intelligent. What is intelligence without the ability to succeed? People are not going to be able to cure AIDS from a hospital bed. In addition to Dr. Whilson’s revelation, the latest best-seller, Bed-ridden, depicts an all-too realistic world where the population has become so lazy that they do everything in their beds. Food is all processed and drunk through a straw, and TV is as sacred as church

Homework club is the cornerstone of academic success at Windham Middle School. In a recent poll conducted by the Achievement first network, that’s a really large number. Mr. Taylor, by eliminating this invaluable program, you lessen the aid and the time dedicated to academic excellence: a promise made to the parents and students when they signed up for WMS.

“I never really felt like I could connect with a friend, until homework club. I started hanging out with Kev and we worked on our math. It turns out we had a lot in common. Now he and I chill all the time.” This is just one of many of the success stories seen as a result of homework club. While other clubs and programs can boast that they too nurture friendships, homework club does so in a positive academic light. Additionally, according to recent studies in the Academic Journal, “when a student learns from a teacher, they learn, but when a student learns from another student, they experience. This experience leads to mastery.” Mastery, Mr. Taylor, is what we strive for at WMS, and mastery can and will be achieved when students interact with one another in an academic manner; homework club provides that ability.

Conclusion Paragraph "The Final Gift" Notes!!
The Conclusion Paragraph of a persuasive essay is where the writer revisits their three arguments. The writer should also captivate the reader’s attention and provide the reader with a final gift: _____________________,

__________________________________________, or

_________________________________________.
a call to action
a question to ponder
a bigger picture realization/a connection
Must Haves for the Gift to be ready to give!
1. Hook: Book End, Vivid Description, bandwagon,
fact/statistic, rhetorical question, expert opinion.
2. Revisit Three Reasons/Restate Thesis:
a. Must highlight the most important argument.
3. One or combination of the following final gift(s): call to action, Now or Never statement, a question to ponder, make you think statement, bigger-picture connection/ realization.
Below are some of the _________ a writer has at their disposal.
tools
Call to Action
Provides a desired action for the audience.
Book-end Hooks
A special kind of conclusion hook that references
the vivid description used in the intro paragraph.
Now or Never Statements
A statement that creates a sense of urgency around the call to action
Definitive Language Language that asserts authority.
Makes the Reader Think Statement
Highlight the Most Important
Argument
Using a phrase like “most importantly
or “don’t forget” to add emphasis to the supreme argument
Objectives:
1. Students will employ practice CMT test strategies for sample Reading Comprehension passage.
2. Students will analyze various conclusion paragraphs for effectiveness by determining whether or not they contain each of the parts.
Mr. Taylor, you may recall at the beginning of this essay that I depicted a young man in the midst of a claustrophobic person's nightmare, listening as someone screamed, “Thief.” Now I want you to picture something different: The halls of WMS are immaculate. Other than the top-quality work, all that can be seen for the extent of the hallway are sets of lockers, blue and gold. When the students are dismissed, they silently open their lockers to reveal hints of personality, organizational masterpieces, and most importantly their belonging safe and secure. Mr. Taylor, lockers at WMS will unequivocally (undoubtedly) change our school for the better.
Example #1
_______ Hook: book-end anecdote (that refers to the anecdote at the beginning of the essay).

_______ Revisits the three Arguments/Restates the Thesis: lockers should be used at WMS because they will at to the beauty of the school, keep students and school more orderly/organized and keep students belongings secure.

_______ One or combination of the following final gift(s): (call to action, Now or Never statement, a question to ponder, make you think statement, bigger-picture connection/ realization.): make you think statement

Effective or not effective (is this gift ready to give?): effective gift!
Example #2

From Timbuktu to Kalamazoo, golf is sweeping the nation and taking the uninspired couch potatoes to prolific players. The next time you’re starving for an athletic adventure, think of golf. Golf is a gentlemen’s game where manners matter as much as the score, it’s cost-effective, and for those of you who think you’re past your stride, it can be played at any age. Golf has something for everyone. Why not see what the sport has to offer you?
_____ Hook:
Fact/Statistic on golf's world-wide influence
_____ Revisits 3 Reasons/Restates Thesis:
Golf is 'a gentleman's game,' it is cost effective and is a game for all ages
_____ Combination of Final Gifts:
a question to ponder

DO NOW (1/7):
Write Down one introductory paragraph OR body paragraph answering the following prompt.
Should teachers give students a piece of candy every time they execute a good task?
Candy is a treat that is sweet and especially appealing to younger students. Because of this fact, candy can be a good tool to motivate students or children to complete tasks (such as dreaded chores, homework or babysitting). However, I argue that teachers should not give candy out to students every time they execute a good task because it will spoil their appetite, it will make students hyper, and it may cause an infestation of bugs!

Dad, picture yourself looking out the city-bus window. As you pass the gas-station on Whaley Avenue, the number 2.39 a gallon whizzes by. You revel at the thought that you just paid 50 cents for the same ride. Taking the city-bus will improve your mental health, allow you the freedom to read the paper or finish that final proposal, and, best of all, you’ll be saving money—enough in two months to put a down payment on that boat you’ve always wanted. Just think, instead of drowning in traffic, you could be sailing across the open sea.

_____ Revisits 3 Reasons/Restates Thesis:
Gives three details/park features that could be added but does not state them as reasons.
