Freemium Model
Skype is a “feature-based freemium” where its possible to build into products and more spread
With this model, customers can immediately use some version of Skype completely free.  However, customers must pay to use additional features or functionality
The reason Skype can make so much money while small percentage are paying, is that the free product is so cheap for them to duplicate and distribute
Skype is free
Free is quite interesting to people. Especially free and good.
And it's more interesting still impoverished young people!
If you tell your friends to get Skype too, you can talk for as long as you like without worrying about the cost or the distance.
Thank you!
