He was a vet during the last Civil War in Colombia, and he always has been waiting for fifteen years his retirement payment, the pension that he has a right to his services and sacrifices. The Colonel and his asthmatic wife have been living in misery, poor, as a homeless person because they have been waiting for a letter to finally recognize him as a vet, this letter will give him the pension, and they will have a better life but the government seems forget him, and never sent him his letter approval ,
It is very difficult to live in third world country because the government is not provides to the people many things that they has a right like water, schools, roads, hospitals, jobs, etc. It is incredible that an old retired Colonel has been waiting for fifteen years for his retirement payment.
The novel is developed after Civil War in Colombia, it relates the life of an old
retired Colonel, he is a victim without solidarity, abandoned, poverty from the government.

He was a vet during the last Civil War and he always has been waiting since 15 years his
retirement payment, the pension that he has a right to his services and sacrifices. The Colonel
and his asthmatic wife have been living in misery, poor, as a homeless person because they have
been waiting for a letter to finally recognize him as a vet, this letter will give him the pension,
and they will have a better life, but the government seems forget him and never sent him his
letter approval. The Colonel needed to sale many things from his house, but now he does not have
anything with value, he only have an old clock but anybody needs one because all people has
the same clock in the village. The letter and a cockfight give him the reason to his life, things
that the Colonel puts his dreams and happiness to get some money and it will change his life,
the fight cock can fight and gain it or the letter with his retirement payment could be his
salvation. Many times they have not had anything to eat, but the cock has never felt hunger it is
the first in their house because the cock will give their money, stability and recognition.

The Colonel always has been a lot of patient, every Friday is a new opportunity new hope for
him, he wait at the post office for the letter but it never came. The colonel comes back to his
house and he tells his wife maybe the next Friday will be come, this is one reason for his life,
waiting and waiting every Friday.

The Story
Characters
The unnamed Colonel has been waiting for his pension for fifteen years.
His money and his options have run out, he has nothing left to sell, nothing except the fighting rooster that his son left them after he was killed by government soldiers, and an old wall clock that anybody wants to buy because all people in their town have one exactly. The Colonel has a lot of patient, he is waiting for his recognize from the government.


The unnamed Colonel’s wife is asthmatic, she never leaves from her house, she had a son named Agustin who was killed by government soldiers because he was distributed clandestinely information. She was patient too.


The priest Angel always was responsible for censoring films that appeared in the Village; at night he was alert who is going to see the movie.


The unnamed doctor is a good person, kind and charitable, he received every Friday the newspaper and he writes the clandestine comments, and then it is distributed among the villagers.



Don Sabas the most rich man in town, he does not have scruples, and he made his fortune in company of the mayor.
When the mayor expelled the revolutionary people from village, they must leave town, they will need to sell their owns properties as faster as they can, and Don Sabas was a
man that he can buy that properties at half price for them because they needed the money.

The rooster: all hopes are placed on it. The Colonel and the common people are waiting for this fight in January. They hope become rich in special the Colonel, that he wants to get enough money to support his wife while he waits for his letter from the government.



Settings

Is a town so far the civilization only a mail boat coming here every Friday with letters and newspapers from the capital, the doctor writes clandestine comments this is a town where no one goes, anyone enters. It has a military regime controlled by a mayor and it is controlled by the priest Angel too, he say what movie is permitted or no see each week. At 11:00 pm the bells rings 12 times and no one can leave, because it has a martial law. It is happening in 1950 a few days after the Civil War in Colombia.


Symbols

The Mail boat: one hope for the Colonel because it is bringing a letter that he is waiting for
fifteen years

The letter: It gives him his recognition as a vet and his money from the government for his
sacrifices and participation in the Civil War.

The fighting rooster: The Colonel and common people are waiting that it is able to gain the fight.
It symbolizes the hope, the prosperity, the abundance, the health, the happiness, the dreams, the
reason by themselves to live their lives.

Bell: Remember always that they are no free, they are under the control by the government and
the Catholic church. When the bells rang every day two times a day, it is always a sign that it
says you are not free, you are forced to live here, you cannot run outside of this town.
