<<there is no easy road to freedom>> Nelson Mandela Nelson was born in 1918 in a small south African village called Mvezo.
He was the first in his family to attend school. It was at school that his friends gave him the name "Nelson" as a substitute to Rolihlahla.
He spent many years in prison accused of terrorism when he was leader of the ANC. After being released and with the end of apartheid, he became president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 . who is he? Nelson Mandela was imprisoned in 1956 because he was opposed to apartheid and the South African government. Apartheid An Afrikaans word for a system of racial segregation enforced through legislation which dominated in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. Not even 27 years in prison could stop Nelson's fight for democracy. The day Nelson was released he continued his fight. Prison ! he would fight for equality for all races not just blacks. Nelson Mandela was not only a member of the ANC (African National Congress), he was the leader of this organization that deprecated against apartheid.
