There are many different types of poetry. Poets use different forms to help express their ideas.

couplet
limerick
haiku
free verse
epitaph
cinnquain
shape
clerihew
Definition- a pair of lines of a poem that rhyme


Example
`Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there

Couplet

Definition- funny poem; light-hearted; often nonsense


Example
'There was an old man with a beard
Who said, 'It is just as I feared,
Two owls and a hen
A lark and a wren
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

Limerick
Definition- Japanese poems written in 17 syllables into 3 lines of 5, 7, 5 syllables; often about nature


Example
The last winter leaves
Clinging to the black branches
Explode into birds.

Haiku
Definition- poem that does not follow a mixed meter or have a rhyme scheme


Example
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Free Verse
Definition- 5 line poem line 1- noun (one word)
line 2- adjectives (describes the noun)
Example line 3- action verbs (about the noun)
Triangles line 4- feelings or a complete sentence
pointy edges line 5- one word that sums everything up
revolving, rotating, angling
Triangles are all different.

Cinquain
Definition
something written or said in memory of someone who died, usually written on a gravestone



Example
“In loving memory of John Gray: husband, father, soldier.”

Epitaph
Definition
a poem written so the lines form a physical pattern, usu. related to the subject of the poem

Shape
Definition
a silly, four-line poem...the first line is the name of the poem's subject, usually a famous person and the rhyme scheme is AABB


Example
Our art teacher, Mr. Shaw,
Really knows how to draw.
But his awful paintings
Have caused many faintings.
