Mercury
Mercury is a rocky planet and is the closest planet to the sun. It orbits faster than any other planet at a speed of 48km per second. The size of Mercury is 4,880km. The surface temperature gets to 450 degrees celsius. At night the temperature gets as low as -170 degrees celsius because there is no atmosphere to keep the heat in. Mercury is 57,910,000km ( 9.83245278 a.u) from the sun and is 77.3 million km ( 1.3124652 a.u) from Earth, it takes 88 days for Mercury to orbit the sun. For Mercury to hold life it needs temperatures that would allow water to stay on the surface for excessive amounts of time and also would need an atmosphere. If there was past life on Mercury it would have had to go through many harsh events that lead to extinction, therefore that is why there will never be life on Mercury.
Venus
Venus is a rocky planet and is the second planet from the sun. Venus and Earth are called twins because the the size of them is so alike. Venus is the hottest planets even though it isn't the closest planet to the Sun. It is the hottest because Venus has a thick atmosphere that traps in the heat. The temperatures on Venus can get up to 465 degrees celsius. It gets so hot that probes scientists have sent to Venus have only lasted a couple of hours before getting destroyed. It takes Venus 224.7 days to orbit around the Sun and it is 108,000,000 km ( 0.718 a.u) from the sun. It is also 261 million km ( 4.43148019 a.u) from the Earth. The speed that Venus orbits around the Sun at is 126,077 km per hour. The size of Venus is 12,100 km. There is a very low chance of life on Venus because the heat would prevent humans/animals surviving and the pressure of the atmosphere is quite strong that it would crush any living thing.
Earth
Earth is a rocky planet and is the 3rd planet from the sun, the size of Earth is 12,800km. It is our home planet and is the only one known to hold life. Earth is made up of land , water and air. It takes Earth 365 days to orbit the sun and it orbits the sun at 107,300km per hour. Earth is 149,600,000km (2.5400361 a.u.) away from the sun. Scientists think Earth was formed 4.5 billion years ago. It takes Earth 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.091 seconds to rotate on its axis. Our Earth has 4 layers: The Crust, Mantle, Inner Core and Outer Core. Explorer 6 ( satellite) was the first to take pictures of our Earth in 1959. 70% of the Earth is covered by ocean. There is life on Earth because it has an atmosphere and its temperatures are bearable. The highest recorded temperature on Earth is 70.7 degrees celsius ( 159 degrees Fahrenheit), the hottest place on Earth is the Lut Desert in Iran.

Mars
The Planets Aligned.
Sun
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
The sun is the centre and the biggest object in our solar system. The part of the sun that we see has a temperature or 5,500 degrees celsius. The temperature in the core can get up to more than 15 million degrees celsius ( compare that to a Melbourne summers day of 42 degrees celsius.). The sun is only one of more than 100 billion stars in the Milky Way and was created about 4.6 billion years ago. The surface of the sun is called the "photosphere". The temperature of the photosphere is about 5,800 K. The cooler parts are called " sun spots". The temperature of the sun spots are about 3,00 K. The diameter of sun spots are about 5,000km.
Mars is a rocky planet and is know as "The Red Planet".It is the 4th planet from the sun. The size of Mars is 6,800km and its takes Mars 687 Earth days to orbit the sun. Mars orbits the sun at a speed of 86,871 km per hour. Mars is 227,936,640 km ( 1.52366233 a.u) from the Sun and is 225 million km ( 1.5040321 a.u) from the Earth. Mars has a thin pinkish atmosphere and at the moment scientists say that water cannot stay on the surface for any period of time and believe that there is ice below Mars' poles. Mars' temperature can get as low as -90 degrees celsius and can get to 20 degrees celsius. Mars has 2 moons Phobos and Deimos. Phobos means " Fear" and Deimos means " Rout". Mars holds the highest and deepest mountain which is Olympus Mons.
Jupiter is a gas planet and is the 5th planet from the sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system with a size of 142,000 km and is 740,742,600 km ( 4.95155844 a.u) from the sun. It takes Jupiter 11.86 Earth Years or 4,332 days to orbit around the sun. The closest Jupiter gets to Earth is 628,743,036 km ( 4.2028876 a.u) and the furthest it gets from Earth is 928,081,020 km (0.00620383843 a.u). The temperature of Jupiter can get to 20 degrees celsius. Jupiter's atmosphere is the largest in the solar system and is mainly made up of hydrogen and helium. Jupiter's enviroment is one of strong gravity. Winds can get to 362.1024 km per hour. It would be very unsafe to live on Jupiter because of all the chemicals in the air and severe storms. Jupiter's most popular feature is " The Giant Red Spot" which is a giant hurricane like storm that has been seen for more than 300 years. Jupiter has 67 moons, the 4 largest moons are called Lo, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun and is a gas planet. The size of Saturn is 120,00 km, it is so big it could hold more than 760 Earths and it weighs about 95 times Earth's weight. Saturn is 2,867,000,000 km ( 19.1647113 a.u) and it takes 29.45 years (10,759 days) to orbit the Sun at a speed of 34,700 km. Saturn is 1.2 billion km ( 8.02150455 a.u) from the Earth. The temperature of Saturn is -178 degrees celsius. Saturn is one of the windiest planets, winds can get up to 1.800 km per hour. There is no chance of life on Saturn because extremely low temperatures and high magnetic fields make it unlikely that there will ever be life. Saturn has 62 moons. Saturns rings are believed to be made up of pieces of comets and asteroids.. The rings span up to 281,635.2 km, There are 7 rings in total.
Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun and is a gas planet. 80% of Uranus' weight is fluid mix water, methane and ammonia ices. The size of Uranus is 51,200km, it takes Uranus 84 Earth years to orbit the sun at a speed of 24,460km per hour. Uranus is 2,870,972,200 km ( 19.1912638 a.u) from the sun and is 1,607,000,000 km (10.7421315 a.u) from Earth. Like Saturn Uranus' temperature is extremely cold and ranges between -153 degrees celsius to -218 degrees celsius. Because Uranus is on its side it experiences extreme weather with a sngle season lasting up to 20 years, Uranus spins on a horizontal axis apposed to a vertial axis like other planets. Uranus does have an atmosphere but even though it has an atmosphere it could not sustain any life. This is because the temperatures are so low life could not survive and it also has strong gravity. Even though Uranus' gravitational pull of 86% is less than Earth's if you weighed 1000kg on Earth you would only weigh 860kg on Uranus. Uranus has 27 known moon they were named after magical spirits in English literature e.g. William Shakespear's " A Midsummer's Night Dream".
Neptune is the 8th planet from the sun and is a gas planet. It is 48,600km in size. Neptune is 4,498,252,900 km ( 30.0689634 a.u) from the sun and completes an orbit every 165 Earth years. It orbits the sun at a speed of 5.43km per second ( nearly 20,000km per hour). Neptune is 4.4 billion km ( 29.4121833 a.u) from Earth and its temperature is - 218 to -380 degrees celsius. Neptune does have an atmosphere mainly made up of hydrogen, helium, with a little bit of mathane, water, ammonia and other ices. There is a low chance of life on Neptune because of its extremely low temperatures and molecules.
Did You Know?
Every 248 years Pluto moves into Neptune's orbit for about 20 years. Neptune has 13 known moons. The largest moon is Triton and it is the only moon in the Solar System to circle the opposite way to its planet. This is called "retrograde orbit"

Moon
The moon is the easiest celestial body to find at nighttime. It takes 27.3 days to rotate on its axis and orbit Earth. Recent evidence that has been found says that the Moon was formed when a big collision tore a chunk out of the Earth away. The mantle of the Moon is 1,330 km thick. The moon is rocky with craters on it formed by getting hit with asteroids, metoers etc.. The atmosphere of the moon is so thin that a footprint can sit there undisturbed for centuries. The distance between the Earth and Moon is 384,400km ( 0.00256955529 a.u) The moon is 150 million km (I.00268807 a.u) away from the Earth. The diameter of the Moon is 3,476 km
Asteroid Belt
The asteroid belt is in between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroid belt holds more than 750,000 asteroids. All of these asteroids are leftover from when our solar system was formed 4.6 billion years ago.The largest asteroid in the belt is 965.6064 km in diameter and the smallest asteroids can be as small as pebbles. Hundreds more asteroids are discovered each year. The asteroids in the belt have an orbital period of 3-4 years. About 200 of the asteroids are more than 100 km. The belt it 178,637,184 km wide.
