Theory of government in which a single political party or leader controls the economic, social, and cultural lives of its people.

The treaty said that Germany must
accept guilt that it started the War.

Adolf Hitler was very angry at Germany's defeat. He severed in world war one as a solider but got injured.
Hitler became the chancellor of Germany and began building up the german Army.Finnaly he became the Fuhrer of Germany.

1. Hitler ordered German troops to take over Rhineland.
France and Britain were aware of these actions but were not ready for another war.
2. Hitler later took over Austria and Czechoslovakia.
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler. They agreed on:
The
Munich Agreement:
stated that Hitler could have the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia provided that he promised not to invade the rest of Czechoslovakia.
But Hitler did
not
keep his word and invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia.
Britain and France did not take action than finally Germany invaded Poland and this was the start of world war Two.
Series of Events:
1. France and Britain felt bad for Germany and thought the treaty of Versailles was too harsh.
Germany start building up their army so they could protect themselves. They thought that Hitler's action were fair and agreeable.
They also thought that Hitler was right about taking over other smaller countries because of the land lost after the warafter
Neville Chamberlain: prime Minister of Brittain (may 1937).
He took up appeasement because he thought Hitlers actions were justifiable.
Germany had invaded Poland and Britain had promised to protect Poland >> World War 2 (Sept. 1939)
The League of Nations came out from president Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points. He designed these points for peace after world war I and a big part of it was the League of Nations. The League of Nations was meant to prevent future conflicts. The idea was great but there were many problems in the League of Nations.

Problems:
1. designed so that all nations Joined but that did not happen. Woodrow Wilson was not able to get America to join.
a. Slowly countries started leaving and the league would fall apart.
2. the league had no army.
a. It was designed that other countries would give soldiers to help stop conflicts but countries were reluctant and did not give soliders.
3. the league did not have a lot of power and failed to act quickly.

1937: Japan controlled its domestic and foreign policies and its RR.

United States Reaction
The United States once again had to decide what role they would take in WWII.
FDR decided isolationism would be best for the US for now..
Not everyone in America agreed.
War Begins
Hitler launches a blitzkrieg (lightning war) against Poland.
Then attacked Norway and Denmark
Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg
Took over territories in France and tried for Britain
Miracle of Dunkirk: Germany made a mistake that allowed 338,000 French and British troops to escape and live to fight another day.
Americans Debate Involvement
Neutrality Act of 1939: allowed nations to buy goods and arms in the US if they paid cash and carried merchandise on their own ships.
FDR inches toward involvement
Steps towards war:
Lend-Lease Act: Allows FDR to sell, transfer, exchange, lease, or lend any defenses article to another government in the interest of American defenses.
US Enters the War
US supporting China and having military presences in Guam and the Philippines poses a threat to Japan.
Japan's empire continued to grow throughout China and into Indo-China.
FDR tried stopping the expansion by placing an embargo on important naval and aviation material.
Cutting off Japan from American oil, iron, ore, fuel, steel, and rubber.

Wanted military expansion.
Throughout the summer of 1941 US and Japan continued to negotiate an end to their disagreement.
November 1941, US rejected Japan's final demands.
Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor: the site of the US Navy's main Pacific base.
Tojo goal was to destroy Amercian naval and air forces in the Pacific and damage their chances for entering the war.
Outcome: 2,500 dead, 8 battle ships damaged, and 160 aircraft destoryed.
However, aircraft carriers were out at sea and untouched.
