Transcript of Black History Month Project

By: Sara Mawani Black History Month is the month of February that we celebrate contributions in America made by african americans and people of african descent around the world. Black history month was started by Dr. Carter G. Woodson
who was an african american in 1926. Negro History Week is what they used to call it. It was celebrated the 2nd week of February, because they wanted to celebrate Abraham Lincoln the white president who freed slaves and Frederick Douglass the 1st african american vice presidential nominee's birthdays. These 2 men worked hard for african americans. Now black history month is celebrated for a whole month of
February in the U.S and Canada, it is celebrated in the month of October in the United Kingdom. Dr. Woodson studied african american culture and encouraged other people to study it to. He thought that it was very important for people to recognize the great contributions black people have made. Martin Luther King Jr. gave an "i have a dream speech." Dr. Woodson spent his life educating people as publishers,
teachers, and writers. he was a political activist who worked to make sure the Government treated african americans fairly. Negro History week
became Black History Month in 1976 in celebration of our nations 200th birthday! Some people think it's unfair to have a month celebrating
one race. others say that celebrating Black History separately
from american history highlights the idea that african americans are not americans. but people who think Black History is important say that as long as there is racism, unfairness, and a lack of understanding black culture there IS a place for black history month. No matter what your background everyone
can celebrate the importance of black history month.
some of the ways you can do that is by reading about
some of these famous people and their inventions. No matter what
