Transcript of Thesis, Topic, & 5PE

TOPICS & THESES
A thesis should also give an overview of
where
your essay is going to go and
what
you’re going to talk about.
Double Checking Your Thesis:
did you establish an issue?
take a stance?
make a claim?
can your thesis be supported with reasons & evidence?
are your reasons valid?
Topic:
video games impact on intelligence
Potential Stances:

Remember!
Thesis & Topic Develoment
and a bit about the
Five Paragraph Essay

So, I have a topic and a stance, how do I build my thesis?
A thesis should:
• State a valid point
• Express a strong opinion
• Be supported with facts

What things bother, concern, frustrate, or really inspire you?
This Mini-Project is all about
TAKING A STANCE:

choosing a side
arguing a point of view
defending a position
Bad thesis:
People are getting dumber in America.
Goldilocks:
your

thesis should be
just right.

Broad enough that a most of your audience can relate to it, but narrow enough that you can argue it.
Why might the 5PE
not always work?
organization
structure
how to support your thesis
how to be clear
how to get started
A thesis isn’t “right” or “wrong”.

A thesis is debatable/arguable.
A solid stance should provide one side of a bigger debate.
5 Paragraph Essay
(5PE)
Where can you get help for writing thesis statements?
essays don’t always fit the 5PE essay template
essays have more/less than three reasons
evidence needs more "unpacking time"
Establish the topic or problem:
animals use in circuses
paying college athletes

Take a Stance on that issue/problem:
animals should/shouldn't be used
athletes should/shouldn't be paid

Thesis Building
Why do you think your teachers taught the 5PE?
Counterargument:
Earth's climate has always warmed and cooled, and the recent rise in global temperature is within the bounds of natural fluctuations.
Stance/Argument:
Human activity is a primary cause of global warming & climate change.
We're going here!
Build a thesis that gives your reader a roadmap to your essay:
what can they expect to read?
what evidence can they expect to see?
what will you try to persuade them of?
A strong thesis:
makes a claim
is provable with evidence
is precise (not broad)
A strong thesis should not be a claim with which every reader is likely to agree. Otherwise,
so what?
Why are you writing this argument?
EXAMPLE
video games make people less intelligent
video games contribute to learning
Good thesis:
More than anything else in our society, video games are responsible for the “dumbing down” of American citizens.

Some examples to help you get through:
The "By" Thesis Statement
By examining/analyzing/evaluating the characters, cinematography, and music in the film
Titanic
, this essay will show/argue/suggest that the film's narrative is sexist.
Americans should eliminate the regular consumption of fast food because the fast food diet leads to preventable and expensive health issues, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Straightforward statement
When your reader reads your thesis statement, he/she should know:

1. what your specific topic is
2. what your point/argument is
3. how you plan on making your point/argument
4. who/what specifically your topic refers to
