What are instructional
data teams?
An instructional data team is a small grade-level, department, course-alike, or organizational team that examines work generated from common formative assessments. The work is analyzed, and the data is used to make instructional decisions for differentiated groups of students.

Department and Course-alike teams across
grade levels (Vertical Team)
Smaller content area teams on same grade
level (Horizontal Team)
Middle and High School
Given to all students shared in common by team members
Assessment items are created by the team members
Items focus primarily on prioritized standards and/or learning goals identified by the team
Student work on the CFA is analyzed in meetings and serves as the basis for discussion of changes in instructional practice
What do these teams do?
The 5 Step Data Team Process
1. Collect and chart/display data.
2. Analyze data and prioritize needs
3. Set, review, and revise, incremental
SMART goals.
4. Select common instructional strategies to be
employed to address the learning challenges
discovered in Step Two.
5. Determine results indicators.

Teachers must come prepared for a 60 minute meeting.
a. Complete with student papers (CFA)
b. Arrange from proficient to least proficient
using Excel document

Data is submitted to the team leader PRIOR to the meeting.

At the meeting, the team leader provides each team member with the data shown in a table or graph.
Step 1: Collect and Chart the Data

Step 2: Strengths/Obstacles
(10-20 minutes)
The team uses the results from Step 2 to determine the instructional strategies for Step 4.

Researched-based strategies need to be selected for each of the groups of students.

Strategies chosen need to address the obstacles and bring about mastery of the SMART goal.

Data Teams use common priority standards, generate common formative assessments, and use common scoring guides to monitor and analyze student performance.
Data Teams have scheduled, collaborative, structured meetings that concentrate on the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

The Leadership and Learning Matrix
The team examines student work to determine strengths, obstacles, and anything that stands out.
Team members should look for
trends, patterns, and
underlying misconceptions.
Inferences are made to determine reasons for successes and obstacles.
The team recorder completes a chart for Step 2.
The team members create a short term goal.

The goal needs to be attainable yet challenging and address the needs of diverse learners.

A template is used to create a SMART goal.
This is a very important step that is often overlooked.

It will show if the strategy is having the desired effect on student learning.

The team develops results indicators to clearly describe student and adult behaviors if success is achieved in relation to the instructional strategy.

"Look-fors" in student work are also established.
