Salvador Dali Salvador Dali is a surrealist artist, that means his paintings give an element of surprise and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. He was born in Figueras, Spain on May 11, 1904. He is spanish and his wife's name was Gala Dali. Explosion The Persistence Of Memory This painting is one of Dali's main paintings. It was made in 1931. Its museum location is New York City at the Museum of Modern Art. The material that was used was oil on canvas. Salvador would entertain people at night, but one day he sat down at a table and stared at some melting Camembert cheese on one of the tables, he then looked at his watch to see what time it was and he suddenly got the idea to make melting watches, and immediately he started to draw. Dreams were also an ingredient in his paintings. He was also very impressed by Einstein's conclusion that time is relative not rigid.

In the 1920's, Dali went to Paris and began interacting with Picasso, Magritte and Miro leading to his first Surrealist phase. Salvador Dali had a sister named Ana Maria and a brother named Salvador. Sadly, Salvador's brother died of a disease called gastroenteritis later on in his life. In 1922 Dali went to Madrid to study at the
School Of Fine Arts.
In 1929, Dali had met his future wife Gala (Elena Ivanovna Diakonova) and started living together since then. Later on in 1934, they had a secret civil ceremony. Then in 1958, they got remarried in a Catholic church. Famous Surrealism Artists Famous Salvador Dali Quotes Some artists born in Dali's time period are
Yves Tanguy (1900-1955), Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982),
Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), and Leonor Fini (1907-1996). There are many more but these are just the ones I chose. http://arthistory.about.com Some of Dali's famous quotes are:
"Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings."
"Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it."
These are two of many famous quotes by Dali. http://www.brainyquote.com/ Bibliography Google.ca (Search/ Images) In 1980, Dalí was forced to retire from painting due to a motor disorder that caused permanent trembling and weakness in his hands. He was not able to hold a paint brush, and lost the ability to express himself in the way he knew best. Also in the year 1982, his wife Gala died. These two events put him in a deep depression.
Then in 1984, Dali had severely burned in a fire which took place in his bedroom. People say the fire was a suicide attempt or it was possibly his simple negligence by his staff. Then in November 1988, he entered the hospital with a failing heart. Sadly, on January 23, 1989 in Figueras, Spain. Salvador Dali past away at the age of 84 due to a heart failure.
