Transcript of Hydrothermal Vents

Hydrothermal Vents
Jessica Luo and Jennifer Wong

Biome Conditions

- 35-210 F
- ~7000 feet
- minerals & heat
- last 12-100 years generally
- sulfur, barium, calcium, silicon

Types of Vents
Black Smokers
- hottest
- iron and sulfide
White Smokers
- cooler material
- barium, calcium, silicon
Organisms
- bacteria, invertebrates, crustaceans, fish,
tube worms
Threats & Function
- deep sea mining- getting minerals
from the vent areas

- emits carbon dioxide
Food Web
Keystone species: symbiotic bacteria,
Galtheid crabs
Primary Producers
- bacteria convert minerals into energy
Primary Consumers
- some consume vent bacteria
- others are symbiotic with bacteria
Secondary Consumers
Tertiary Consumers
Ecological Interactions
Competition: zooplankton, amphipods, vent shrimp

Mutualism: chemosynthetic bacteria, tube worms
Ecological Interactions
Commensalism: gut bacteria in squat lobsters

Parasitism: microbes in vent mussels

Predation: Zoarcid fish feed on tubeworms
and mussels
Adaptations
1. Bacteria convert sulfur to energy

2. Mutualism between tube worms and chemosynthetic bacteria
Endangered Species
- No hot spots

- Too far from other ecosystems

- No endangered species/little data

- Isolated community
Conclusion
- extreme conditions

- small diversity of animals

- research is still ongoing

- may be threatened in the future
