The Strorm Family David Strorm David Strorm is the narrator of the story. David is one of a small group of kids who can communicate with each other through telepathy. However, their community's religious beliefs against anyone who is abnormal or not in god's image means he and the others must keep their abilities carefully hidden. David is kind because he takes care of Sophie as a kid, he is protective because he fights for Sophie, Rosalind, and Petra's protection, and David is Loving because he shows his love for Rosalind Joseph Strorm Joseph Strorm is the father of David and Petra. He is deeply religious and opposed to the subject of mutations and blasphemy, punishing David severely for an unintentionally blasphemous remark about "needing an extra hand" to apply a bandage. Joseph is ignorant because he is not open to new things, he is strict because he does not accept anything but the norm, and Joseph is Quick Tempered because he gets angry easily. Kind Protective Loving favorite Line “So you're in love with her?' she went on.

A word again ... When the minds have learnt to mingle, when no thought is wholly one's own, and each has taken too much of the other ever to be entirely himself alone; when one has reached the beginning of seeing with a single eye, loving with a single heart, enjoying with a single joy; when there can be moments of identity and nothing is separate save bodies that long for one another ... When there is that, where is the word? There is only the inadequacy of the word that exists.

'We love one another,' I said.” This line is my favorite simply because of it's passion Ignorant Strict Quick Temper Favorite Line It's easy to see why some people would approve them. one of hose brutes could do the work of two, maybe three, ordinary horses - and for less than double the feed of one. There is a good profit there, a good incentive to get them passed - but that doesn't mean they're right. Even though i don't agree with the context of this line, i do like the fact that he is very smart. Emily Strorm Emily Strorm is a pathetic woman who follows in her husbands shadow and does not have her own opinion. she is David's mother and Joseph's Wife. Emily is narrow minded because she only believes in what Joseph does, she is unsympathetic because she shows no sympathy for her sister, and Emily is untrustworthy because she does not have her own opinion. Narrow Minded Unsympathetic Untrustworthy Favorite Line You have the effrontery to bring your monster into my house, and tell me its nothing much! This line of Emily's is my favorite purely because of the irony it exerts. Petra Strorm David's younger sister who is also able to communicate telepathically. Petra's abilities are slightly different from those of David and the others. The difference in abilities is that Petra has a stronger force of communicating. When David had saved Petra from drowning, he described what the force felt like to him. He said that "it was as if something had hit him physically, inside his head". Petra is understanding because she understands David and Rosalind, she is intelligent because she learns how to use her powers with haste, and Petra is brave because she stays strong during the climax of the novel. Understanding Intelligent Brave Favorite Line The Chrysalids Character Tree ' Oh, sorry,' Petra apologized to the ship's crew, and to the city in general, 'but it is awfully exciting.' This is my favorite line because it shows Petra's innocents Aunt Harriet Aunt Harriet is Emily's sister who gives birth to a slightly deviated infant, after failing to conceal this infant she commits suicide with the baby. Aunt Harriet is Smart because she had come up with a plan to save her child, she is selfish because she could not take the hate she killed herself and her child, and she is understanding because she shows no hate towards he child Smart Selfish Understanding Favorite Line “I shall pray to God to send charity to this hideous world, and sympathy for the weak, and love for the unhappy and unfortunate. I shall ask Him if is indeed His will that a child should suffer and its soul be damned for a little blemish on the body....And I shall pray Him, too, that the hearts of the self-righteous may be broken... ” This is my favorite line because it shows Aunt Harriet's opinion on Waknuk's religious beliefs Uncle Axel Uncle Axel is a widely traveled former sailor, open minded and willing to question conventional religious topics. Upon discovering David's telepathy, he makes David promise take great care not to allow others to learn of his mutation. Uncle Axel is adventurous he is a former sailor who traveled around the world, he is Helpful because he gives David lots of advice and explains things to him, and Uncle Axel is open-minded because He doesn’t believe that the Waknuk religion is right about mutants being sinful and thinks that David’s telepathy is a new character of mind instead of a deviation Adventurous Helpful Open-Minded Favorite Line “If you run away from a thing just because you don't like it, you don't like what you find either.” This is my favorite line because it is so true. Spider Man Gordon the "Spider-man" is Joseph Strorm's brother, and would be the heir to Waknuk, if not found to have a "deviation". the deviation that is talked about is that he is extremely long and lanky. Gordon is vengeful because he plans to take over Waknuk in spite of Joseph, he is angry because he is never happy, and Gordon is Sick because he was prepared to rape Rosalind for children. Angry Sick Favorite Line 'Not seen much of the women around here, have you, boy? Take a look at 'em as you go. Maybe you'll understand a bit more. Besides, this one can have children. I've had a fancy for some children a long time now -- even if they do happen to take after their father a bit.' He grinned briefly again, and then frowned at me. ' Better take it the way it is, boy. Be a sensible fellow. I don't give second chances.' This is my favorite line because it shows how sick Gordon is. Vengeful The Group Michael Michael is the most objective, perceptive and decisive of the telepaths, the best educated, and in many ways plays a leading role in the group. His telepathic abilities remain secret, and during the pursuit into the Fringes he joins the leading posse in order to give updates and warnings to David, Rosalind and Petra as they flee. He is also in love with Rachel. Michael is trustworthy because he shows no betrayal in the novel, and Michael is compassionate because he fells for Kathrine when she is tortured. Leader Compassionate Trustworthy Favorite Line 'It is war. Some day I'll kill them for what they've done to Katherine.' This is my favorite line because it shows Micheal's compassion Rosalind Rosalind Morton is David's closest friend among the group of telepaths. They become more of a couple later on in the book. She lives on a neighboring farm and is David's half cousin. Rosalind is Brave because she does not show fear in the toughest of positions, she is smart because she is coordinated and well planed, and Rosalind is humble because she does not comment on Sophie during there confrontation. Brave Smart Humble Favorite Line 'But we can be killed quite safely?' Rosalind commented, with some bitterness. This is my favorite line because it shows Rosalind's understanding. Anne Anne is the oldest member of “the group”. She represents a victim of a strict society and how it can effect people that are different. Anne would like to be a norm and to fit in. She does not care how her decisions can affect her and the others around her. Selfish Stubborn Vengeful Favorite Line ' I'm not a fool. Of course I've thought. I've thought more than you have. I'm a woman -- I've a right to marry and have children. There are three of you and five of us. Are you saying that two of us must never marry? Never have any lives or homes of our own? If not, then two of us have got to marry norms. I'm in love with Alan, and I intend to marry him. You ought to be grateful. It'll help to simplify things for the rest of you.' This is my favorite line because it displays Anne's Ignorance. Rachel Rachel is the last remaining telepath in Waknuk after David, Rosalind, and Petra are brought to Sealand. She is afraid of loneliness, while being in love with Michael, as Rosalind loves David. As a result of this love, Michael remains behind with Rachel. Rachel is caring because she cares dearly for th e group, she is loving because she still loves her sister after what she does, and Rachel is attentive because she is always trying to figure out whats going on. Caring Loving Attentive Favorite Line ' She won't see me. She won't let me into the house. She's let a neighbor in, but not me. She screamed at me to go away.' This is my favorite line because it shows Rachel's love for her sister. Katherine Katherine is the neighbor of Sally and was the first to be discovered by Waknuk. while being tortured she reviled David, Rosalind, and Petra. Katherine is Brave because she was not scared when she was captured, and Katherine is tough because she took the torture. Brave Tough Sally Sally is the neighbor of Katherine and was captured with her. Sally is apologetic because she apologizes multiple time on Katherine's behalf, and Sally is Caring because she cares so much about the groups well being. Apologetic Caring Favorite Line 'We're being taken to the Inspector's. We're all innocent and bewildered. Is that best?' This line is my favorite because it shows Sally's intelligence. The Others Sophie Wender Sophie Wender is a young girl born with six toes on each foot. Sophie is an important character in the novel because she shows David that deviations aren't all that bad. Sophie is introduced at the start of the novel and brought back in towards the end. Sophie is sweet at the beginning of the book, she becomes more tough and vulgar due to the circumstances she is forced into. Sweet Vulgar Rough Favorite Line “Sophie dear,' I said. 'Are you in love with him - with this spider-man?'

'Oh, don't call him that - please - we can't any of us help being what we are. His name's Gordon. He's kind to me, David. He's fond of me. You've got to have as little as I have to know how much that means. You've never known loneliness. You can't understand the awful emptiness that's waiting all round us here. I'd have given him babies gladly, if I could. ... I - oh, why do they do that to us? Why didn't they kill me? It would have been kinder than this...' This Line is my favorite because of the sadness that is displays Angus Morton Angus is the father of Rosalind and the enemy of Joseph. Angus and Joseph are in constant feud with each other. The reader is introduced to this feud when we are introduced to Angus's "Great Horses" Angus is Smart because he got these giant horses to save him money and increase his profit but he is also very mischievous because of it, and Angus is very argumentative. Smart Argumentative Mischievous Old Jacob Jacob is the old man of Waknuk who has an opinion on everything. Jacob is introduced to the novel to give the reader more of an insight on the past of Waknuk and he introduces another opinion on how the society is moving forward. Jacob is very stubborn because of his lack of accepting change, he is traditional for the same reason, and Jacob is Judgemental because he cannot seem appreciate progress. Stubborn Traditional Judgemental Favorite Line ' Sure. 'Course I am. Think I don't know the way a bean ought to look, at my age?' This is my favorite line because of its comedic value alone. Alan Ervin Alan was the blacksmith's son, his prospects were those of becoming the blacksmith himself. He was also Anne's husband who discovered and reported Sophie. he planned on blackmailing the group with this and ended up getting violently murdered for it. Alan is selfish because he cares for no one else, he is vengeful because he reported Sophie, and he is just mean. Selfish Vengeful Mean The Sealand Lady The Sealand woman and her people are from a more technologically advanced society where telepathic ability is far more common and is accepted, promoted and studied. The Sealand Lady is intelligent because she is very knowledgeable, she is very humane because of the way she handled the people at the end of the book, and The Sealand Lady is very helpful because of the tips she gives David, Rosalind, and Petra. Intelligent Humane Helpful Favorite Line ' It is not pleasant to kill any creature,' she agreed, ' but to pretend that one can live without doing so is self-deception. There has to be meat in the dish, there have to be vegetables forbidden to flower, seeds forbidden to germinate; even the cycles of microbes must be sacrificed for us to continue our cycles. It is neither shameful nor shocking that it should be so: it is simply a part of the great revolving wheel of natural economy. And just as we have to keep ourselves alive in these ways, so, too, we have to preserve our species against other species that wish to destroy it -- or else fail in our trust. This is my favorite line because it shows the reader her intelligence with metaphors and also her love for science. The Inspector The inspector is responsible for purity in Waknuk. he has high authority in the town and he is unable to think beyond his job description. Unjust Mean Favorite Line 'Loyalty is a great virtue, but there is such a thing as misplaced loyalty. One day you will understand the importance of a greater loyalty.
