Our favorite metric:
Many times I’ve asked myself “Why am I doing this? Isn’t electricity a tedious subject best left to experts?” Knowing that the staff at WBEZ’s Curious City cared what I did, that they valued citizen input as much as that of experts, kept me going.

The quest I began with WBEZ as a “curious citizen” one year ago has now culminated in the launch with C3 of Electric Community, a series of interactive community-based activities to engage Chicago residents in “greening” our electricity.

Who knew a radio program could have so much power?
Engage because you actually care

Gives you a set of outside ears on a story before it's published.
Don't need to hope participant feedback makes it to the comment section. They are baked in.
Can have an interest and *still* be involved in reporting

Tools for finding the public at-large:

Rory made a great suggestion along the way
Question-askers can ask different (and better) questions than reporters during reporting
Do they have a
vested interest?

Way to add tape that wouldn't otherwise make it
@WBEZCuriousCity
Getting more input beyond an individual and their question
The story behind the question can become part of the narrative.
Reporting took a long time.
Rory's suggestion shapes reporting and final audio
Question-askers can re-cast the importance of a story and provide the "grace-note"

* note taxi is driving on a bike path
Dan gets first-person accounts with our reporter
Audio came after the web story was completed & live.
But ... such audio potential!
Don't need a bullsh*t scene
Staying with a question-asker (aka individual) can pay off.
