In Conclusion... girls are better than boys :) A Little Bit of History men= competition, women= cooperation women look for similarities and value cooperation while men establish rank and status Dr. Deborah Tannen: Professor of Linguistics at Georgetown University "We expect differences when we talk to people who come from different countries... but we don't expect romantic partners to understand words differently & have different views of the world." Solutions? Create Common Ground Tannen says, "...learn how to interpret each other's messages & explain your own in a way your partner can understand & accept." women were homemakers, mother, wives. men were warriors, hunters, tribesmen. Where the Conflict Begins a woman follows her natural tendency to offer unsolicited advice BUT men see it as questioning their competence and ability a man follows his natural tendency to offer solutions BUT a woman sees it at invalidating her feelings women want empathy & understanding BUT men just offer solutions women's sense of self= feelings & relationships [relationship oriented], men's sense of self= ability to achieve results [goal oriented] Jeanette Ludwig: Lecturer "genderlect": the study of the different communication styles of men & women "How something is received, constructed, understood is every bit as important as what the speaker intended."
