The faculty and the students at Crestmont High School were shocked to see Hannah Baker’s empty desk and learned that she had committed suicide.
The student body was disturbed, but there was little discussion of the incident.
Clay Jensen, Hannah’s classmate and a boy who had a crush on Hannah discovered a shoebox containing 7 cassette tapes at his front door.
3. Rising Action
As Clay Jensen listens to the tapes, he learns that Hannah Baker was misrepresented in rumors that spread around school.
Because of these rumors, Hannah struggled to fit in, was betrayed and abused by many of her peers.
Clay worried about his own reason for appearing on the tapes, as he suffered over the pain Hannah expressed in her story.
Clay Jensen listened to tape #5 and discovered his connection to Hannah’s death. Hannah does not blame him, but explained that she liked him.
Hannah Baker described a party where she and Clay talked for the first time.

5. Falling Action
All but determined to take her own life, Hannah made one last attempt to ask for help by talking to Mr. Porter, her guidance counselor.
Hannah Baker wanted to hear a solution in her life, but Mr. Porter told her to "move on."
Hannah found this pointless so she recorded the tapes, mailed them, and decided to commit suicide by taking pills.
After listening to the tapes, Clay finally understands why Hannah took her own life.
He was filled with grief but learned Hannah's story.
comes instantly on Hannah's first tape when she mentioned "If you are listening to these tapes, you are one of the reasons why" (page 7). The main reason Hannah made these tapes was to make everyone on her list feel guilty about what they did to her, and hopefully teach them a lesson for the future.
plays a huge part in most of the book, but it stands out most near the end of the story, when Hannah comes closer and closer to her final decision in ending her life.
-is the protagonist of the story. She is a freshman who committed suicide for thirteen reasons.
-is the narrator of the story along with Hannah. As he listens to Hannah's tapes, Clay describes his emotions, thoughts, and reactions to her story.
-is a senior student who is a year older than Hannah Baker. Justin is the first and the tenth person on Hannah's list. He was Hannah's first crush and first kiss. Justin was the reason rumors started about Hannah and when her false reputation went around.

This map represents the different areas around town. Thirteen stars on the map locate each story. Clay was compelled to go to each star and listen to the tapes there.
-is a freshman like Hannah. He named Hannah "Best Ass in the Freshman Class" which involved her to physical violence, and even more rumors.
-was one of Hannah's first friends in Crestmont. She believed in a rumor that Hannah and Alex were together. Thus, Jessica slapped Hannah on her face thinking that she stole her man.
-is a student life photographer in school. He stalked and spied Hannah from outside her bedroom, and took pictures of her for his own pleasure.
-was Hannah's guidance counselor, who she turned to for help in one final effort to save herself. Unfortunately, he ended up telling her to go on and forget about what happened.
In the story, it was Hannah’s reputation that made the people on the list, do what they did. It was all the rumors that built up her reputation, rumors that she could not put an end to.
The reason most of Hannah’s actions back-fired is because the people she trusted ended up betraying her in the end.
Effects of one’s actions on others
-One of the main lessons that Hannah seems to be trying to teach through her suicide tapes is the effect that one person’s actions have on those around them.
-Some of the people in Hannah's tapes could not have realized how their seemingly small actions had such a powerful impact on Hannah's life, and without the tapes they never would have known.
Therefore, the novel Thirteen Reasons Why teaches that it is important to think twice before doing or saying something and to be aware of other’s feelings and emotions.
