Transcript of Jackie Robinson presentation

By:Andre Baker Jackie Robinson After his father left, his mother decided to move the family out to California. Jackie was only sixteen months old. When they got to California, they lived with his mother's brother, Burton. Before they arrived at California, his mother had made arrangements to find other living conditions because Burton's house would be over-crowded, so Jackie's mother took a job washing and ironing clothes. Jackie Robinson
born-1919 Died-1972 October 24th. Jackie was on numerous game shows. throughout his adult life. After his discharge from the army in 1944, Jackie Robinson played baseball professionally. At the time the sport was segragated, and Africans American and whites played in separate leagues. Jackie attended John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College, where he was an excellent athlete and played four sports: football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was named the region's Most Valuable Player in baseball in 1938. Jackie Robinson faced many racial slurs during his baseball career, but also had many supporters. However he faced them with class and never said or did anything to bring shame on him or the Dodger Organization. On October 24, 1972, he died of a heart attack at home in Stamford, Connecticut, aged 53. Robinson's funeral service on October 27, 1972, at New York City's Riverside Church attracted 2,500 mourners. Many of his former teammates and other famous black baseball players served as pallbearers, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson gave the eulogy.

Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo,Georgia in 1919 to a family of sharecroppers. His mother, Mallie Robinson, single-handedly raised Jackie and her four other children. They were the only black family on their block, and the prejudice they encountered only strengthened their bond. From this humble beginning would grow the first baseball player to break Major League Baseball's color barrier that segregated the sport for more than 50 years.
