This term is basically referring to how people without access to current tech are also losing access to all of the skills that come along with it; knowledge of how tech works, research skills, cutting edge information and tools, etc.
What exactly is the "Digital Divide"
Current research shows that the people and students going without new or any technology are in our inner cities, people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, female students, students with disabilities, rural children, and English Language Learners and their families (Dell, Newton & Petroff, 2012).
Where does the digital divide start?
Here are some tips to get started in closing the gap:
: Find resources in your community; go to the local library, use the free internet at your local starbucks or McDonalds

: find a non-profit that will help you gain access to tech for free! These non-profits include

Bottom Line: students without access to information technology have limited opportunities for professional careers later in life. This includes general education and special education students
School districts can play a huge roll in which end of the "gap" their students will end up on.
School districts with extremely limited funds have less money to invest into information and assistive technology.
Students without access to information technology are not learning these crucial 21st century skills to prepare them for success in college and a career later in life:
No internet; no research skills or access to global news
No access to computers and basic office applications: students cannot meet demands in college, complete assignments
No media access; students cannot build collaboration and networking skills
