Transcript of Designing Scripture Engagement Games

In some contexts, games spread quickly like social media, and are more acceptable ways of introducing a new idea or product.

Whether made using paper or tactile objects, or put into digital format, games can reach a variety of audiences.
Together we will analyze your context, your target audience and design or adapt games that can encourage the people in your community to overcome barriers to using their language for worship and Bible study. Do people prefer chance games, knowledge games, strategy games? What resources do they have to make or purchase their own games? What kinds of game-play are acceptable and easy to learn? What types of games are acceptable for the devout or “good people?” What kind of games would our partners be comfortable with? What game templates are already available? We will show you some games that have been created based on this kind of analysis, and then tested and are now being used in a few places.
Beginning with the analysis, and moving into tactile game development, we will also have opportunity to learn how to put some games into digital format, depending on who joins the training team for these sessions. For more information write to scripturegames@emdcon.org.

It's only 33 years since I was writing games on one of these. (They weren't great but what can you do with 16K of memory?)

You've played many different games in your life. Before we explore deeply how others have analysed games we will briefly discuss our own experience.
What would Jesus play?

How does our personal theology, and church background influence what games and how much play is appropriate for Christians?
What do your friends play?
What do the shops sell?

Culture shapes our understanding and attitudes
http://www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/news/melodie-daoust-makes-her-olympic-debut-in-sochi "For Team Canada rookie Mélodie Daoust, “be the best you can be” is such an important personal philosophy, the initials “BTBYCB” are inked permanently onto her left wrist as a lifelong reminder.

Getting a tattoo is often seen as an act of youthful rebellion, but Daoust’s undeniable dedication to those words is more an indication that this 22-year-old is wise beyond her years.

She’s also mature enough, both on and off the ice, to be the youngest player on Canada’s National Women’s Team for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Perhaps more impressive is that Daoust made the cut without having played for the national team at an IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, the lone Canadian without major international competition experience. There are games designers in all parts of the world. Who will you connect with?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gaming_in_Kenya
"According to Brian Kinyua from four-man team University of Games, games offer an environment in which players can tackle social problem by themselves, without a "mob to back you up [or] peers to cheer you on." Kinyua believes that the idea of solving societal issues with gaming should be taken more serious. "
