Successfully Shifting Toward the Common Core and Essential Standards.

An Example of Change
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

Reason abstractly and quantitatively

Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

Connecting the standards for
mathematical content

Model with mathematics

Use appropriate tools strategically

Attend to precision
Look for and make use of structure
Look for and express
regularity in repeated
reasoning
All students should use similar math tools to explore mathematics.
Math Practice Standards should be used to teach grade level Math Content Standards !
STANDARDS FOR MATH PRACTICE ~ K -12
All students need these "tools" for math success
Grade 5, Information and Technology Essential Standards
Sources of Information
5.SI.1 Apply criteria to determine appropriate information resources for specific topics and purposes.
5.SI.1.1 Use various types of resources to gather information (including print and online media).
5.SI.1.2 Use relevant Sources of Information for an assigned task.
5.SI.1.3 Use reliable Sources of Information.
Informational Text
5.IN.1 Analyze appropriate strategies when reading for enjoyment and for information.
5.IN.1.1 Differentiate strategies when reading informational text in a variety of formats (e.g., print, online, audio, etc.) to complete assigned tasks.
5.IN.1.2 Differentiate strategies when reading various genres.
Technology as a Tool
5.TT.1 Use technology tools and skills to reinforce and extend classroom concepts and activities.
5.TT.1.1 Use a variety of technology tools to gather data and information (e.g., Web-based resources, e-books, online communication tools, etc.).
5.TT.1.2 Use a variety of technology tools to organize data and information (e.g., word processor, graphic organizer, audio and visual recording, online collaboration tools, etc.).
5.TT.1.3 Use technology tools to present data and information (e.g., multimedia, audio and visual recording, online collaboration tools, etc.).
Research Process
5.RP.1 Apply a research process as part of collaborative research.
5.RP.1.1 Implement a research process by collaborating effectively with other students.
Safety and Ethical Issues
5.SE.1 Understand issues related to the safe, ethical, and responsible use of information and technology resources.
5.SE.1.1 Understand the guidelines for responsible use of technology hardware.
5.SE.1.2 Understand ethical behavior (e.g., copyright, not plagiarizing, netiquette) when using resources.
5.SE.1.3 Understand internet safety precautions (e.g., personal information, passwords, etc.).

INFORMATIONAL TEXT
Differentiate strategies when reading for enjoyment and when reading for information!
This is a to a quality power-point lesson on text structure for 5th grade students)
Technology as a Tool
Use technology to gather data, organize
information and create presentations on
a variety of classroom concepts.
Use a variety of relevant and reliable print and online media resources to find information for specific topics and purposes.

SOCIAL STUDIES and Science
ESSENTIAL STANDARDS!
In the past, 5th grade students were required to study the entire North American continent. With the new Essential Standards, fifth grade students will begin the study of United States History. They will focus their study on the same period in time as in 4th grade but transfer their understanding from the state to the national level.
5th Grade Social Studies Essential
Standards
Students participating in a trade fare as a
culminating activity in 5th grade social
studies. Students had to make a ware (or
many wares) and barter and trade with
their classmates. They had to record the
experience in an Glog!
Science should be more student centered with the new essential standards! As students gain experience in conducting simple investigations and working in small groups their strategies for finding solutions to questions improve. Educators must encourage students to make more careful observations and record them more accurately. In order for students to do this, they must be given more advanced tools such as calculators, computers, graduated cylinders, scales, and meter sticks to gather data and extend their senses.
SCIENCE ESSENTIALS
Teachers should be continually helping students draw parallels between contemporary issues and their
historical origins.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE????
Shift our classrooms: Take students out of individual desks and put them in cooperative groups.
Shift our thinking: The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
Shift our insecurities: Self-reflect, ask others for help with your weak areas, and allow them to ask you for help with theirs!
Shift our interest: Try something new! Rekindle your passion for teaching!
Shift our training:Seek classes to help keep up with our students!

Adaptive Considerations
In order to help our students be more college ready and incorporate the Common Core and Essential Standards, our school will need to.....
Write grants for science lab resources, ipads and computers!
Develop a lab to share the computer lab more effectively.
Utilize school personnel in different ways
Bring in community resources
Partner with other schools
Be creative!
