Environmental Degradation
and Public Policy

Government
The natural world has been negatively impacted by the human race and there is a need for suggested policies to be considered to improve the environment. This thesis identifies and educates its audience on the relevance of various environmental issues.
Global climate change
Power plants
Fossil fuels
Hydraulic-fracturing
health and government
Introduction
“We shall never understand the natural environment until we see it as a living organism. Today you can murder land for private profit. You can leave the corpse for all to see and nobody calls the cops,” Paul Brooks.
Human development has substantial bearing on our current and future generations
intrigued by the connections
Hydraulic-Fracking
Removing natural gas from underneath the ground floor
Process
Fracking Fluid- 596+ proprietary
Arsenic, cadmium, lead, peripheral neuropathy, glycol ethers
Marcellus Shale
Beneath the unfiltered watershed that serves New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware (15.6 million people )
Acknowledgments
It is with great delight that I thank Dr. Osei for advice and constructive criticism, Dr. Ozbay and Dr. Burke for editorial guidance, Dr. Conley for teaching me to elevate my writing, Ms. De Mooy for her Climate Change Series presentation, and Mr. Pickrum for environmental and governmental information.
Lit. Review
Subsidence
greenhouse gas
particulates
non-renewable
photovoltaic cells
volatile organic compounds
biosphere
Legislative branch
House and Senate (Congress)
Constituent concerns
Passing bills
Global climate change concentrated areas
CO2, methane, and CFCs
Greenhouse effect (absorb infrared radiation)
Heavy rain- fungal growth
Warmer winter- insect breeding
Delaware subsidence
Once-Through- thermal pollution
Wet-Recirculating/Closed Loop- high rate of consumption, cooling tower (no thermal pollution)
Dry Cooling- 90% less water, no thermal pollution, more fossil fuels (scrubbers)
Lit. Review Cont'd
Coal
decaying vegetation
Natural Gas
drilling
"cleanest" & most abundant
Petroleum (oil)
decaying marine life
war
Gulf Oil Spill (2010)
Redirect sources, uses, and impact
Geothermal, wind power, solar power
Nuclear power
Chernobyl 1986
Hydroelectric
Xayaburi Dam (Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam)
Energy Task Force
CEOs and top figures from oil and gas companies
Dick Cheney (former CEO of Halliburton)
40 meetings, none included an environmental agency or interest group
Halliburton Loop Hole under Energy Policy Act (2005)
Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and Superfund
The Red Zone Testimonials
testicular toxicity, malformation of the embryo, bone marrow depression, and hemolysis
Mike Markham and Martha Mendenhall- buy water in town using $15 worth of quarters; plastic bag well; state claimed the water was safe to drink
Debbie May- house cat vomiting and losing fur; stop rubbing against telephone poles
Headaches, dizziness, wandering aches and pains, asthma, no smell and taste (hydrogen sulfide), brain tumors and lesions
The Fenton family- 24 oil wells with condensate tanks producing 300 feet of brown smoke
Amee Wellsworth- “Who’s here for the people?” congressman answered, “Nobody. Call an attorney.”
Jeff and Rhonda Locker- contaminated water, Rhonda got sick, $21,000 lawsuit demanded Encana provide a reverse osmosis filtration system
Drill the rig
Crack the shale
Extract the gas
Produced water to pit
Evaporation sprayers
Volatile organic compounds= Acid rain- food, animals
Sublette County Ozone
Separator boils water
Condensate Tanks (or ocean)
2004 EPA investigation rejected
Government says: not proven cause of health issues, contamination, or environmental degradation
Government says EPA did not come to any hearings for the proposal of the bill against fracking
Present day we need the natural gas located underneath America.
I suggest U.S. scientists develop a technology to safely extract natural gas without contaminating wells.
The workers of the oil and gas companies should be told all of the health risks and hazardous materials they are exposed to.
Deregulation of the Halliburton Loop Hole
Clean water and financial reimbursement to effected families
