Memories of The Giver
produced by:
Colin Drake
Connor Johnston

One song from this generation that uses this theme is
Mama Said
by Lukas Graham
Here are two lines from
Mama Said
that prove this theme.
"Don't get me wrong I didn't have it bad
I got enough loving from my mom and dad"
Connection between the lines from the song and Jonas
In this line from
Mama Said
by Lukas Graham he is saying how he did not have much growing up, but he did have the love of his parents. The memory of always having his parents love has shaped him into the man he is today. This links to the novel
The Giver
by Lois Lowry because Jonas is content with his relationship between him and his family unit. However, when he receives the memory of Christmas and love from the Giver his disposition changes. He realizes that he has not shared any meaningful memories with his family unit, and this truth is tearing him apart.
Here are two more lines from
Mama Said
that prove the theme
"I know which place I'm from
I know my home"
In the novel
The Giver
by Lois Lowry many themes are apparent.
One of these is,

whether they empower or destroy us, memories shape who we are
Connection between the lines of music and Jonas
In these lines of music the singer talks about remembering his home and where he came from. This gives him strength through memory to cope with problems by going back to his home and being with who he loves. In the novel
The Giver
by Lois Lowry Jonas has no real home and family to come back to. This causes problems like when he watches release and says that he cannot go back to his house. In our society most people would go back to their homes to feel better and not worry about going home because we remember that our family loves us. Another example from
The Giver
by Lois Lowry is when Jonas is biking away from his old community with Gabe. Jonas realizes that he has no true reason to go back, and that the only thing that would make him go home was if he had a meaningful memory of those he cared about.
"How can we not talk about family when family's all that we got?"
The second song is...
See You Again
by: Wiz Khalifa
The first quote from
See You Again
proving that,
whether they empower or destroy memories shape who we are.
Connection between the lines of music and the novel
In these lines of music the singer is saying that family is extremely important. He wants to talk about his family and thank them because he remembers that they helped him through tough times. In the novel
The Giver
Jonas has no family to rely on and help him. There was no Love involved for Jonas to remember and thank his parents. Memories can help us remember what ourfamily has done for us and know that they are going to care for us.
The second quote from
See You Again is...
"Everything I went through you were standing there by my side
And now you gon' be with me for the last ride"
The singer in these lines is saying how someone was with him for a long time. Also that he wants them to be with him even when he is dead. In The Giver by Lois Lowry Jonas experiences this same feeling when he finds out that Gabriel will soon be released. So in order to save him Jonas takes him on his journey to Elsewhere. These strong feelings have originated from the moments when the two of them have connected. For example when Jonas first saw Gabe's eyes, or when Jonas first gave him a memory to put Gabe asleep.
