Study Guide: LS 3.b Life
Transcript of Study Guide: LS 3.b Life
All organisms INGEST gases, liquids, and solids to make energy.
All organisms DIGEST, they break down their food for the nutrients
All organisms EXCRETE to get ride of waste.
4: Growth and Repair
Organisms GROW, they develop enough to reproduce
Organisms REPRODUCE to pass on DNA (genes).
There are 7 Characteristics
of a Living Thing
6: Maintain Homeostasis by Responding to Stimuli
7: Made of Cell(s)
Organisms are either made of a single cell: a unicellular organisms
A unicellular organism (single-celled), ingesting other organisms.
This snake is digesting it's food
When we EXhale we are EXcreteing carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas
Organisms REPAIR, to fix what is broken
Other organisms reproduce ASEXUALLY (1 organism passing on DNA, offspring is identical)
Some organisms reproduce SEXUALLY: 2 organisms pass on half their DNA to offspring.
: pupil gets smaller so too much light doesn't get it
in order to
(adjusting internal conditions to balance health)
Response: you sweat to cool off
You are now maintaining
OR they are made of billions of specialized cells: multicellular organism
Together they form Skin Tissue
Together they form Plant Tissue
Abiotic = non-living, AND things altered with chemicals.
Study Guide: LS 3b Characteristics of Life
2. Scientists found something in the jungle.
Is it biotic (alive)?
It ate food. Its digestive tract is visible. It got bigger. It had a baby. It responded to light by hiding. It exhaled just like people do. And it is made of many cells.
Using the table, check off all the characteristics of life it has.
On the lines provided, explain whether the "something" is abiotic (non-living) or biotic (living). Explain ALL your reasons.
Answer #1 now before going through the Prezi. Just use your memory!
Made of Cells
Grow and Repair
Sense and Respond
3. Why do we do the 7 characteristics of life?
4. Homeostasis: Your body is constantly trying to maintain a normal balance. It wants to be a certain temperature; when you are cold you shiver to get warmer and when you are hot you sweat to cool off.
Now write YOUR OWN definition.
iii. Your body senses when you EXERCISE and it responds by SWEATING to maintain HOMEOSTASIS.
v. A flower PRODUCES A SEED to PASS on DNA.
i. Humans get SCARS to FIX what is broken &
Humans GET BIGGER to DEVELOP enough to REPRODUCE
ii. The moss EXHALED gases to get rid of WASTE.
vi. The mold BROKE DOWN the bread to get NUTRIENTS.
iv. The flower TOOK IN the water to make ENERGY.
Go through the Characteristics of Life HW Prezi also.
Bring your Study Guide to your teacher and they will check it and schedule your retake.
If you have incorrect answers you might be asked to go home and go through Prezi's again.
Draw a STAR at the top RIGHT corner of your Study Guide so I know you printed it yourself.
