Gregor Mendel Interview Questions
Transcript of Gregor Mendel Interview Questions
By: Brock LIghtner
Why do people consider you the father of genetics?
Because I was the first person to study heredity
What were you studying when you made the first detailed investigation of how traits are inherited?
What is heredity?
What is Genetics?
Genetics is the study of genes, heredity, and genetic variation in living organisms.
Heredity is the passing of phenotypic traits from parents to their offspring, either through asexual reproduction or sexual reproduction
Why did you use pea plants?
because they grow fast and are very convenient
What year did you discover genetics?
How many characteristics of pea plants did you use?
What were the 7 characteristics of pea plants that you used?
plant height, pod shape, pod color, seed shape, seed color, flower position, and flower color
History of Gregor Mendel
Gregor Mendel was born on July 20, 1822 and died on January 6, 1884. Gregor's real name that he was born with was really Johann Mendel. Gregor Mendel was a German-speaking Moravian who gained fame as the founder of the modern science of genetics. Mendel's pea plant experiments conducted between 1856 and 1863 established many of the rules of heredity, now referred to as the laws of Mendelian inheritance. After he did his pea plant experiments Mendel coined the terms “recessive” and “dominant” in reference to certain traits.
How long were you doing these pea plant experiments?
I believe it was seven years
What did you show with seed color?
I showed that when a yellow pea and a green pea were bred together their offspring plant was always yellow. However, in the next generation of plants, the green peas reappeared at a ratio of 1:3.
What is a recessive trait?
recessive trait is a trait that must be contributed by both parents in order to appear in the offspring
What is a Dominant trait?
a trait that will appear in the offspring if one of the parents contributes it
What did you start your study of heredity on?
What happened the first time you tried to share your work?
I got rejected
Why did you stop using mice?
Because my bishop didn't like it
What does homozygous mean?
having identical pairs of genes for any given pair of hereditary characteristics
What does heterozygous mean?
having dissimilar pairs of genes for any hereditary characteristic.
How is a recessive trait represented?
With a lowercase letter
How is a Dominant trait represented?
With a capital letter
