Transcript of Assyrians vs. Chaldeans

The First Empires The Assyrian people lived in the north of Mesopotamia near the Tigris River. The Assyrian army was the first large army to use iron weapons. The Assyrians learned the technique of hardening iron for use in weapons from the Hittites. After the Assyrians captured a city, they drove people away and moved them into foreign territory. The capital of Assyria was at Nineveh on the Tigris River. The Chaldeans captured Nineveh in 612 B.C. King Nebuchadnezzer rebuilt Babylon as the center of the Chaldean empire. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Babylon was known throughout the world for its wealth. The Chaldeans were the first to have a seven-day week. In 539 B.C., the Chaldeans were defeated by the Persian army.
