Joel doesn't want to help

starts to understand

he is to be an "upright". Plot:
Introduction: The two main characters are Joel and Sebastian. The story takes place one Saturday afternoon at a track and field facility.
Rising Action: Joel is helping Sebastian for his community service hours, he reflects on how much he hates sports.
Climax: Joel starts to warm up to Sebastian, and starts to get more comfortable being around him
Falling action:Joel is intrigued by Sebastian throwing the javelin. He starts to have a change of heart. (a turning point)
Conclusion:Joel decides that he is going to practice the javelin Elements of
Doing Time Questions 1.Sebastian includes Joel as part of his team. What does this say about Sebastian’s character?
It reveals that Sebastian’s character is not quick to judge, and prefers to get a feel for the person from his experience with them.
2.How does the author reveal Joel’s character?
The author reveals Joel’s character through his actions, (for example, his initial and obvious lack of interest) his words, (example, how he keeps saying he doesn’t “do” this, or doesn’t “do” that) and his thoughts. 3. Why does the author choose to include actions of other characters in the story? What is the purpose of the coach and her reassuring tone and voice?
The author includes the actions of others so that we, the readers, can get a feel for their personalities, and their individuality. 4. Do you think, considering his offense, that this is a good placement for Joel?
Yes, I think it’s a good placement mainly because hopefully it will teach him compassion. Maybe being around disabled kids will let him know how much he takes for granted, and make him stop braining people over the head with cricket bats. 5. What lesson does Joel learn on these two pages?
He learns not to be so judgemental, and to learn to accept others for what they are.
6. What is the climax of the story?
When he starts to warm up to Sebastian, and starts to get more comfortable being around him, and when he stops hating the whole prospect of this position. #13. The conflict? How is it resolved? How does point of view contribute to resolution

Joel does not want to help the disabled. He gets comfortable with time and settles in. You can see his mood change through his actions and actions. #14 Which short story elements worked well in the story?

Flashback: give us details about the past fight. Character development: shows us realistic personalities and gets us more into the story. We grow to appreciate the characters. #15 infer: what happened in Joel's past?

Yes and Yes. The author never writes anything that suggests that Joel was given a fair punishment. Joel is clear that he does not think he deserves what he got.

What does the statement “If he’s the devil, I’m the pope’’ reveal about the speaker’s character?
This statement reveals that the speaker doesn’t think of himself as a very good person. It shows that he thinks Sebastian is the opposite of the devil and that he is the opposite of a pope. This statement is an exaggeration. What is revealed about the main character of this story?
Joel doesn’t like to get things wrong even if it is the first time he’s tried something, he also, does not like sports. The protagonist is judgmental for example; “I was calling him a wheelie.” Joel seems to act without thinking. An example is when he hits another person with a cricket bat. Joel does change throughout the story by watching Sebastian do track events. This inspires him to start practicing javelin. How does knowing the elements of the short story help you understand the text?
Knowing the elements of the short story helps me to understand the text by revealing things about the characters through conflict and point of view. Also, the plot organizes the story to help keep my focus.
Christine Harris is a well-known Australian author. She is 57 and has written many texts from picture books to horror stories. Her stories say a lot about her and almost always convey a message. Christine’s books include Doing Time, Foreign Devil, and Snowy’s Rescue. After reading this story how can you respond to the statement “Sometimes turning points happen when we least expect them.”?
