Transcript of Europe Postcard- The Netherlands

Dear Polly,
I tried some interesting Dutch food today. For breakfast I had Poffertjes, which are thick, mini pancakes. For lunch I had a piece of bread topped with Vlokken. Vlokken is small chocolate shavings. Lastly, for dinner I had Stamppot and pea soup. Stamppot is potatoes and other vegetables mashed together. I'll bring back some Dutch liquorice, since there are so many different kinds!

Dear Polly,
Today was the most fun I've had all trip! We went to this amazing Tulip Festival in the Noordoostpolder! The tulips were gorgeous! In the tulip fields, there used to be old fashioned windmills, but now there are big wind turbines. The Netherlands produce more than 1/2 of the world flower exports! The tulips are really amazing this time of year! I wish you could see them!

Dear Polly,
Today I went shopping. We went shopping in Amsterdam in the City Centre. There were so many stores! I used a euro to pay for my clothing. Euros look a lot like American dollars. But they're more colorful. I bought a present for you today, but I can't tell you what it is! You'll have to wait until I come home!

Dear Polly,
This is the house I'm staying at. It's really beautiful and the host family is very welcoming. Today's weather was rainy, like it is most days. The weather was around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. It feels a lot like April in New England. How's the weather in Massachusetts?

Dear Polly,
Today I visited a Dutch school. It's called the Theo Thijssenschool. It's a primary school, which is like an elementary school. Kids go to school between ages 5-18, much like American schools. There are also Religious and Non-Religious schools. The school system in the Netherlands is a lot like the American one

Dear Polly,
It is my last day in The Netherlands. It is also Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day) which celebrates the birthday of Dutch Queen Julianna. Everyone wore orange and had street parties. The orange theme went a little overboard. Besides the orange clothing, there was orange banners and orange colored food and drinks! It was so much fun and I'm sad to leave. I hope to come back someday, maybe you'll come with me!
From,
Polly
