Thirteen Reasons Why
Transcript of Thirteen Reasons Why
She looks back and determines the reasons that built up and caused her demise, recording herself along the way, with cassette tapes.
We make the emotional journey with her, seeing how a person so loving and vibrant becomes so lost.
Eventually, just before the night of the suicide she finishes the tapes, and sends them off to her first reason why. Crush on Hannah, maybe one of three that actually did care.
His point of view..
Listens to tapes & hear his thoughts/memories.
If he's listening to them... He's on them. He's one of the "Rule number one: You listen. Number two: You pass it on. Hopefully, neither one will be easy for you...When you're done listening to all 13 tapes, rewind them.. and pass them on to whoever follows your little tale. And.. lucky 13.. you can take those tapes with you straight to H*** and depending on your religion I'll see you there too."-Hannah Baker, page 9. The truth shall set you free. We don't ever know the impacts that we have on other's lives. More aware of others feelings and possible emotions. Not that I feel all of the emotions going through Hannah's head, but I really do think we all can relate in some way. Not suicidal, but in smaller ways. Think before you act. 13. Mr. Porter Made list that voted Hannah "Best A** in Freshman Class".
Hannah saw her name and Jessica Davis's name; Jessica being voted "Worst A** in Freshman Class."
Alex made list to get accepted and used Hannah simply to have a name next to Jessica. Hannah's first kiss All of the reasons these things are a big deal are reasons none of us think about until they happen to us, or unfortunately; until something as drastic as this happens and it opens our eyes. Back to the beginning... He told everyone they did a lot more. New girl + Rumors = Horrible "I almost forgot. If you're on my list, you should've received a map."
-Hannah Baker page 11. Two called into councilors office
Not about rumors/list
She wanted the two new students to meet and bond.
So they went to a local cafe and drank hot chocolate... before long, Alex Standall (List) showed up because he was new too. Hannah's only friend had just turned against her. "I know you didn't mean to let me down. In fact, most of you listening probably had no idea what you were doing- what you were truly doing."- Hannah baker, page 13. Page 29. quote about truth is the least popular story page 66. rumors on rumors. happy girl Just moved to area
Had friends before So, he steals the Walkman from Tony He's on yearbook... that's why he carry's the camera... right? For candid shots of students?
Not when Hannah heard that familiar 'click click' outside of her bedroom window. Map of town:
others She didn't know who it was - so she brought in an acquaintance from school to set up something. Staged a 'juicy' scene and then shamed him away. Tyler had just invaded the only safe place she had left. Her house; her room. Where she wasn't judged, or humiliated. Helped her with the Tyler Problem. Well liked at school. Nice girl.
As payback, Courtney added to the rumors Matchmaker Valentine: They go to Rosie's Hannah's first date.
She gets to the diner, sits at the counter...
She waited for 45 minuets. He finally showed up;
Took her to a booth...
And pushed it way to far.
She bluntly turned him down, stopped responding eventually.
Enraged him so he made her reputation even worse. "...Then come to realize that you're making mountains out of molehills. Realize how petty you've become. Sure, it may seem that every time someone offers you a hand up, they just let go and you slip further down. But you must stop being so pessimistic,... and learn to trust those around you.
So I Do. One more time."
- Hannah Baker page 145. (after Marcus) "... will I ever get control of my life? Will I always be shoved back and pushed around by those I trust? Will my life ever go where I want it to? The next day... I decided to find out how people at school might react if one of the students never came back."
- Hannah Baker page 145. She's giving up.
Class like Freshman Seminar (her only safe heaven at school) - brown bags of notes (Encouragement, compliments, advice, discussion topics.)
After the accident with Marcus, Zack had tried to talk with Hannah. She flat out ignored him.
Being mad, he later took her
notes of encouragement. "My world was collapsing. I needed those notes. I needed any hope those notes might have offered.
And you? You took that hope away. You decided I didn't deserve to have it."
-Hannah Baker page 165. Discussion bag; Suicide.
- from Hannah Hannah loved poetry. So she joined a group after school called Poetry: To Love Life
Ryan was another student there.
Showed him her poem notebook.
He read some suicide poems. Newspaper - 'Lost and Found' (love letters, pictures, doodles) Ryan decided to "find" Hannah's poem and publish it. Written by anonymous of course. Students responded, discussed in class formally, Ryan let it slip that it was Hannah. She never confirmed nor denied it. Somber Serious Dark Heart wrenching Chilling B/c of events! If the characters knew, do you really think they would continue on? Hannah, and the others. Now they know for sure. No more wondering. You can't possibly know what's going on in someone else's life. You aren't them. Golden Rule If that would have been followed.. The way my actions affect others Perception plays the biggest role. I could mean something that is interpreted as the complete opposite. We've all been made fun of, and had that shame come upon us. You've wanted to make it upon someone else. Hannah took the harder rode and held it all in. The next time before you make fun of someone, think about how they're going to feel after. Maybe you wont mean to hurt them that way, but who knows? You might. And if the last straw was up to you, you don't wan to be a number 13. "You don't know what went on in the rest of my life. At home. Even at school. You don't know what goes on in anyone's life but your own And when you mess with one part of a person's life, you're not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can't be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person's life, you're messing with their entire life."
- Hannah Baker page 201. Finding all 13 reasons. Students acted annoyed thought it was a joke, just someone looking for attention. That hurt Hannah. Made her more mad. No rumors about Clay, not one. No one had one bad thing to say. Honestly. "Clay, honey, your name does not belong on this list. You don't belong in the same ways as the others.... But you need to be here if I'm going to tell my story. To tell it more completely." -Hannah Baker page 200. "Yes, there are some major gaps in my story. Some parts I just couldn't figure out how to tell. Or bring myself to say out loud. Events I haven't come to grips with. And if I never have to say them out loud, then I never have to think them all the way through."
-Hannah Baker page 201. One unheard of time Clay was going to a party; Hannah had to go. Hannah had sent the tapes to Clay to explain all of her overreactions that night, and to say sorry. They talked, really talked. Then they kissed. That is it. Hannah went to the bathroom, came back out to find Clay waiting for her, and told him to stop, and leave. It took multiple times before it sunk in and her words took effect. He left.
Hannah stumbles into a random room to have some time to sort things out.. During those kisses is when she made the connection of most of the thirteen reasons.
While she's here she senses others coming into the room. She hides in the closet... she was right. A couple. He helped her in the room and onto the bed, but instead of leaving he started kissing her. Getting no response after a few minuets he left. Then she heard a conversation between Justin and Bryce. "What was his reasoning? What did it take for you to step aside and let him in that room? ... The night shift, he told you he was working the night shift and had to leave in a few minuets. A few minuets was all he needed with her. So just relax and step aside." - Hannah page 225. She was raped. List just added to rumors.
