He left Spain in 1519 to begin a journey to India that he didn't think would take him around the world

His Journey Magellan Left in 1519 and sailed to the southerntip of the Americas. He was one of a handful of people who believed there was a route to India and Asia around South America. This would prove to be successful though force them to spend part of the winter off the coast of Patagonia. After sailing through the Pacific Ocean they madefirst landfall in Guam. Then on their second stop they got involved in a local war where Magellan lost his own life in the Philippines. Juan Sebastián del Cano became capitain of the one remaining ship. We remember Ferdinand Magellan because of his epic journey around the world. His expedition was revolutionary in the age of his explorers. His ideas of new routes to India to the south of the Americas was the first of its kind. He also contributed on expeditions in China visiting the Kublai Khan. He was one of the worlds greatest explorers.
