Transcript of Support for the Children

“Children are the world's most valuable resource
and its best hope for the future”
John Fitzgerald Kennedy If the children are so powerul,
who is making sure they have opportunity to succeed? Since 1983, Children's Miracle Network
has raised over $3.4 million for Network hospitals. Sponsors vary from the President
to celebrities. Corporations to
sports teams. Since 1980, Make-A-Wish has enriched lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. With a network of over 25,000 volunteers
the Foundation has granted wishes for
more than 174,000 children around the world. For 25 years, the United Kingdom has had a similar organization called the Children's Trust, Tadworth. The foundation provides care, therapy, education, and rehabilitation to children with multiple disabilities, complex health needs
and acquired brain injury. Lizzie D'Angelo of Children's Trust explains Tadworth Court's Children's Hospital was almost closed in the early 1980's, but parents and professionals created the organization to keep the hospital open. Top Gear star Richard Hammond opened Tadworth Children's Trust brain clinic Hundreds of today's hottest celebrities have
granted wishes and become involved with Make-A-Wish. Although most children with chronic illnesses adjust well,
they are at an increased risk for psychological problems
and a significant number develop adjustment problems.
Matthew C. Hocking and John E. Lochman are researching
on solutions to this problem. What does this mean? Dealing with pediatric illnesses requires three steps. With cognitive process of stress, coping with the change, and beneficial family function, a child can overcome this hard situation. Recovery and healing is a team effort. Every parent, every friend, every teacher has to help the child heal. Every day in America:
1,849 children are abused. 9 children die from gunshot wounds 107 children die before their first birthday. Organizations made for children's
health and recovery are truly the
best investment in our world's future. Coping is a combination of avoidance, wishful thinking, and emotion-focused coping. This is where Children's Miracle Network, Make-A-Wish, and Children's Trust come in. Without their help, many children would lose hope and never recover. The most effective medical treatment is hope and belief. Michael Jordan became the first Wish Ambassador. He was awarded this title for granting over 175 wishes, creating a celebrity golf match fundraiser, and donating $140,000 to the Foundation. In 1980, 7-year-old Chris Greicius was being treated for leukemia. Every day, he dreamed of becoming a police officer. Thirty years after Chris's wish was granted, wishes are continuing to be granted. What
bring? "Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see."

Every year, 17 million kids are treated at Children's Miracle Network hospitals. From pediatric cancer treatment and intensive care to walk-in clinics and child safety programs, these hospitals provide specialized care that can’t be found anywhere else. From raising funds for children's hospitals to finding wealthy sponsors for the children's families that are in need, Children's Miracle Network makes miracles happen.
