AS Media Studies - Music Magazine Coursework Evaluation
In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In the making of my Rock magazine cover, I have tried to set it out like the professional music magazine 'KERRANG'. I have took inspiration from this magazine so that I can try and make my magazine look more professional by using some of the conventions 'KERRANG' uses. I have used many conventions in my music magazine as professional magazines. I have took the idea of having the headline on a slight angle, also with a block background behind it. I have also used the idea of the banner at the bottom to advertise something inside the magazine.
I have decided to use a similar camera shot for my main photo on my magazine. I thought that on the professional magazine the medium shot worked very well so I have decided to use the same convention as the 'KERRANG' magazine above. I also took the idea of using many different fonts on my cover. I have done this so that the reader does not get bored of the same font over and over again and you are always looking at the different fonts for the different stories on the cover. I have decided to used colours that stand out on my cover page. I have used the traditional black and white for the text and background and a red to make certain things stand out. I have decided to use these colours as it gives my magazine a distinctive look and would be easy to pick out on a shops shelf. This is unconventional compared to 'KERRANG' because the professional magazine uses many colours.
For my cover page I have decided to use some of the conventions seen on a professional magazine. I have decided to split my page, having the stories and page numbers at the bottom. I have decided to have a single background image, which is different from the magazine I have compared to, I have done this to show that I have different ideas and other things do work on contents pages for this genre of music.
I have decided to use three colours in my contents page house style. I have chose black, white and yellow, I chose these because they each stand out on the other colour e.g. black on yellow and white on black. I have done this so that the text on the page stands out and is easy to read. On my contents page I have decided to use the fonts which best represent the genre of the magazine I have made, these fonts give a rock feel to the contents page. I have followed the conventions further of the professional magazine buy choosing pictures to go at the top of my page and have used small banners to give the page number of which the album reviews are on. The main image that I have used is of a hand showing the rock sign, I chose this picture because it further represents the genre of music which i have made my magazine.
For my double page spread I have decided to us the same conventions as one of KERRANG's double page spreads. I have decided to use a similar photo of a band mid-concert to show what they look like live. I have decided to use the album covers of Madina Lake's new albums as they were the songs on the set that they were playing at the gig. However, I have decided to challenge a convention of the double page spread i have compared mine too. I have done this by putting text on both pages instead of just one. I have done this to show that there is other ways of setting out double page spreads in this genre of magazine. I have decided to use a yellow text with a black outline, I have done this so the text stands out and it is easier to read on the page.
My final piece.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The magazine I have made clearly shows the heavier side to rock. From the front cover we can see this straight away from the masthead, image and text. The image I have used clearly represents the genre of rock as it is a dark close up which can show the darker side to rock.
The age that my magazine is aimed at ranges from teenagers to people in their mid-20's. this is represented by the simple yet professional lay out of the cover, contents page and double page spread. I have shown this simple layout by choosing 2-3 colours on each page so that the readers eyes do not hop around the page when they see something different that takes their interest if they are reading an article.
My magazine suggests that the social group they would read this type of magazine are young rock lovers who like modern day rock bands. This social group are more likely to go out to see gigs of their favourite bands which are included in the magazine, bands such as: Bring me the Horizon, A Day to Remember and Madina Lake.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
"Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations."
I have chosen BAUER media group because they are the institution that distribute KERRANG magazine, which is in the same genre as my product.
To advertise my product so it would sell, I would first get it distributed to all different stores and have them put it up as a free magazine. I would do this for the first few weeks until more people become interested in it. I would then put a reasonable price on the magazine so that people will carry on reading it even though there is a price for it.

Another way I could help the advertisement of my product is by advertising on social networking sites. This will appeal to many people who like the genre of the magazine which I have made.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
My magazine would be of a certain audience, e.g. my product would be a niche because it contains a certain genre of band which aren't as well known as others.

The type of audience I am trying to attract is those who like the rock genre of music. I aim to attract the same type of people who read magazines such as KERRANG and ROCKSOUND,
I have done this because the readers of these
magazines like similar music to the bands
in the magazine I have made.
How
did you attract/address your audience?

I can also digitally publish my magazine. 17% of all magazines are published digitally, this can also be better for the environment as it saves paper, also it saves space in your house as you don't have to put all of the magazines in one place as they are stored digitally.
To get the attention of my audience I could do many things. One way to get their attention would be to include free gifts with my magazine, things such as free CD's and calendars. This would attract an audience because the music on the discs is of the same genre which they like. Another way I could advertise my magazine would be by putting in on social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. This would gain the interest of the many users of social networking sites who are interested in the genre of music which my magazine is based on. My cover would attract the audience because it has many conventions which are similar to professional magazines such as KERRANG and ROCKSOUND.
My products have been written in formal English, this will attract a large audience because everyone will be able to read the text inside the magazine.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
From the construction of this product, I have learned how to use many things. I have gained further knowledge into how to use Photoshop, I have gained this by using it to edit my photos for my magazine to make them look better and to make them fit to the genre of which I have chose. I have also started to use blogger to keep track of where my work is at, I have been able to upload pictures of my products every time I have improved them to show my progress. I now find blogger very easy to use as keeping my work up to date is vital. One of the main pieces of software I used was Fireworks, I used this to create my actual magazine and to get my ideas on to my work. Fireworks is a good piece of software as it is very simple and easy to use, and also easy to navigate through.
I have also used a camera in my work, i have a good knowledge of using cameras as i am a Photography student.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product?
This is my preliminary product compared to my final piece. It is clear that I have developed my skill in creating pieces for a magazine as my final pieces look more professional than my preliminary products. Also during the making of my final piece I have used pieces of software which I have not used much before, but now I have a greater understanding of them I feel more comfortable using programmes such as Photoshop and Fireworks. I have kept some things similar from my preliminary to my final piece, such as on the cover I have kept a main image, banner across the bottom, and I have also used a splash.
As you can see, I have taken a completely different approach to my final contents page compared to my preliminary contents page. I have used the conventions of the magazine 'KERRANG' to get a professional layout and so it is easy to read. However, I have kept one thing from the preliminary contents page, and this is having one main picture as the background, this shows what social group and genre of music my magazine and preliminary magazine are aimed at.
Preliminary
Final
As I did not do a double page spread for my preliminary exercise, I decided to follow some of the conventions of a professional magazine. I have decided to use a main image as the background with text over it with faded backgrounds so it stands out more so you can easily read it.
Throughout the production of my magazine I have learnt how to use new technology such as Photoshop and Fireworks. Without these pieces of software I would not have been able to complete the production of my magazine project. Since I started to make my product I have been able to use my experience with
these pieces of software to improve my work. I have also learned how to use the conventions of a real professional magazine to inspire my work so that it looks more authentic. I have mainly looked at the rock magazine 'KERRANG' as it is the same genre as the magazine which I have created.
Another thing which I have learned is how to target and attract an audience. Again, using conventions of the rock magazine 'KERRANG' I have been able to see how they attract an audience and I have tried to use that to inspire and influence my work so that it attracts the targeted audience.
