Educational background In grade 12, the educational requirement in order to go to a University for this occupation would be English, Math, Algebra & Geometry/Calculus, Physics, Social Studies, Computers, Drafting & Design and lastly, Electronics & Communications Technology. These courses are highly recommended in grade 12. After high school, the minimum educational requirements for this occupation is a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, and also a degree in a related subject such as electrical or electronics engineering. A bachelor’s degree takes about four years to complete. Three Canadian schools that offer Computer Engineering are York University, University of Guelph and University of Waterloo. Computer Hardware Engineer A computer engineer is a person who designs and creates computer and other parts and pieces related. The responsibilities of a computer hardware engineer is that they have to make and test prototypes, find out the requirements for new products, make computers and other parts, such as circuit boards and monitors, and also make designs and present the finished designs to clients. GLC 207 Tuition The cost for tuition for this career will vary around $8,000 to $14,000. For this program, York University offers tuition for $8,000. University of Guelph charges tuition for $7,790 and University of Waterloo charges $13,951 for tuition. Volunteer work experience There is no volunteer work experience needed, however, you should be aware of most of the components of a computer and their functions. Skills required The skills required for this job are: to have a good knowledge of hardware because you will be expected to purchase and install a lot of equipment. You will also need a good knowledge of different operating systems mainly windows and linux. Have to learn some software. Need a general knowledge in vb.net, sql, asp.net, html and xhtml. And also need plenty of patience and good people skills as well as the ability to work well as part of a team. Another skill you need is to be logical when dealing with equipment. GLC 207 Table of contents Salary On the first year of this job, you will receive a salary of at least $40,000 to $60,000 and going throughout the career, you will soon receive a salary of somewhere between $65,000 and $90,000 a year. However, experienced engineers who work up to a senior or high level, you can earn over $125,000 a year. Benefits Adding to the salary, full-time computer hardware engineers also usually receive benefits. These benefits include health and dental insurance, paid sick leave and vacation times, and pension plans. Some companies also give there engineers a company car and annual profit sharing. Quality of life The quality of life that this career provides is having to travel across the country or around the world to meet with their clients, or to visit factories to check or troubleshoot equipments. People with this occupation usually work at least 40 hours a week. Basically, you can chose your hours as long as you get the job done. What a Computer Engineer does in his day is shown in this video. Interested? I personally, would love to work as a computer hardware engineer. As a computer engineer i get to develop what many people are going to be able to use as a benefit to them. Therefore that makes me feel like i have accomplished something. Another reason why i`m interested to work in this type of occupation is because when i was a kid, i remember that my cousins used to explain to me parts of a computer and i found that interesting.
