“Sound of the Shell,” which begins “Jack stood up” and ends “ ‘That’s your job. So Long’ ” (pages 23-25).

1. Compare and contrast Ralph and Jack’s leadership qualities: circle/underline and mark quotes that illustrate how they make decisions and give orders.

2. What is ironic about the choice of Simon for the expedition?

3. Underline and write about Piggy’s reaction to not being chosen for the expedition. What does he do or say and what does this tell us about him?

4. Why does Piggy approach Ralph after the meeting? Write about Piggy’s disappointment, Ralph’s reaction to Piggy, and what this shows about both of them.

Passage 2. Read the passage from Chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies, “Fire on the Mountain,” which begins “ ‘A fire! Make a fire!’ ”
and ends “ ‘We’ll build a pile. Come on.’ ” (pages 38-39) carefully.

1. Explain the implication of the quote, “Jack clamored among them, the conch forgotten.” What does this tell us about Jack? The conch?

2. Mark Piggy’s reaction to the children’s frantic race to build a fire. What does his reaction show about his character?

3. Mark the lack of foresight shown by both Ralph and Jack. What do they overlook? What does this show about them?

4. Mark the description of the setting in the paragraph beginning “Jack nodded.” Consider the adjectives and verbs used to describe the plants and the connotations of those words.

Passage 3. Read the passage from Chapter 3 of Lord of the Flies, “Huts on the Beach,” which begins
“They faced each other on the bright beach” and ends “were only just sufficient to bring them together again” (pages 54-55).
1. Identify and describe the conflict between Jack and Ralph. What is Ralph upset about? What is Jack concerned with?


2. What is Jack’s response to Ralph’s concerns? Mark what Jack offers and how Ralph receives this offer.

3. Consider the metaphor comparing the boys to “continents”- what does this mean?
