Transcript of Trying to Find Chinatown

Trying to Find Chinatown
design by Dóri Sirály for Prezi
Trying to find Chinatown talks about the encounter of two men; Benjamin an American man who believes he is Asian, and Ronnie an Asian man who knows little about his heritage. Benjamin was adopted by a chinese- American family and is seeking his father's birthplace in New York, Chinatown. He stops to ask a musician in the street playing a violin, Ronnie, for directions assuming he would know about the area. Then Ronnie gets offended when Benjamin assumes he would know where Chinatown is.
Theme is the central idea or meaning of a story. Theme in fiction is rarely presented at all; is abstracted from the details of character and action that compose the story.

Activity
What is the theme of Trying to Find Chinatown?
In the beginning what does Benjamin say to make Ronnie angry?
The theme we see in Chinatown is stereotypes. We see the conflict begins when Benjamin asks Ronnie for the location of Chinatown and he gets offended by the question. We really do not know if Benjamin meant it in such way but Ronnie feels some form of racism from Benjamin assuming Ronnie knows where Chinatown is
