Some of the later toys that kids used and that aren't as common today are things like Tin Toys (1900), which were literally toys made out of tin, Tiddly Winks (1901), which was a game played with little disks, and toy trains (1901), namely Greenberg's Toy Trains which had lights and made noises.

Some of the earliest toys that existed before crayons (toys from the 1800s) were simple toys like building blocks, toy drums, and Hopscotch, which all still exist today.

The first crayons were released in 1903. They didn't change the way kids played but they became a new hobby for kids to have and toy for them to play with. Kids could now use crayons in coloring books, they could create their own pictures on blank paper, and use something called a crayon melters, which was a hot plate that you would put paper over and it melted the crayon wax onto the paper, to create abstract art.

Thesis
Crayons have profoundly expanded the potential for human creativity by allowing new and alternative forms of art, altering the way we see color today, improving early childhood development, and facilitating psychological analysis.

Synopsis
During this semester I chose to research the crayon to try and help better understand where it came from and how it has affected the world since its creation. I started by researching who invented the crayon and why it was created. Then I dove deeper into it's impacts and how it's changed throughout time. I looked at how it's positively and negatively affected the world and how that caused it to change. Through this research I found that crayons are used for more than just coloring and in more places than just the playroom. I found that crayons have socially, environmentally, and politically impacted the world and have greatly evolved to create more colors than ever and new alternative forms of art.
Edwin Binney and Charles Smith also created many and improved many things that drove them to create the many colors they did. Binney and Smith introduced dustless chalks into classrooms which greatly improved teaching at the time. Edwin Binney's goal was not to invent but to improve. He wanted to improve common everyday things. He improved things like carbon black and lamp black. Eventually, he made refined lamp black down to two percent ash which made electrification accessible to millions of Americans. In 1864 Binney and Smith had the opportunity to start up Binney & Smith. The company produced black and red pigments for industrial uses such as coloring tires and barns.

Driving Forces of Inventors
In 1885 he began working for Binney and
Smith, succeeding his father.
Edwin Binney was born in 1866 in
Westchester County, New York to Joseph Walker and Annie Eliza Binney.
In 1882 he began working with Charles Harold Smith.

In 1887 in Brooklyn, New York he married Alice Stead and they had four children.

Major Contributors
Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith were major contributors to the creation of crayons. Edwin Binney was the founder of Binney & Smith.1 Together he and C. Harold Smith created the crayon which has radically changed the world of color. As the founders, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith are responsible for creating Crayola and making the crayon famous.

The Product of Their Creation
The result of Edwin
Binney and Charles
Harold Smith's work was the Crayola crayon. The first box of crayons were released in 1903.
It contained 8 colors;
red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, purple,
black and brown.

Political Hindrances
and Impacts
Crayons have been changed
and shaped by politics.
Crayola, specifically, has had to change names of their crayons on multiple occasions due to racial, societal and political disagreements. For example, in 1958, they changed "Prussian Blue" to "Midnight Blue" to make it less political because teachers thought that the title wasn't sensitive of the Cold War. In
1962, Crayola changed the
name of their "Flesh"
crayon to the color
"Peach" to acknowledge that
flesh comes in all different
shades.

Environmental Hindrances
Overall, crayons are very safe for the environment and children. However, their have been cases where crayons have been recalled due to being unsafe. 14
In April of 1994, 11 brands of crayons were recalled due to lead being found in the crayons. Some of them had enough to cause lead poisoning if ingested. 15
Another major crayon recall occured in August of 2007. Toys 'R' Us recalled some 27,000 crayons (and paints) due to lead being found in the packaging. This time no injuries occurred. 16
Since 2007, no major recalls on crayons have occurred and crayons remain safe and environmentally friendly.

Hindrances in Daily Life
Crayons may be fun for children, however, they do have some negative consequences. Crayons used to be very toxic due to the materials that were used to create them. Crayon factories immediately had to fix this issue as the majority of people using crayons were young children. Now crayons are safe and non-toxic for children. Another consequence is that crayons aren't always used how they were intended. Children write all over walls and tables where crayons are not supposed to be used.

Coloring doesn't only help promote early development in children. It also helps with the analysis of kids. Pictures drawn by children can be used to analyze their behaviors, personality, learning disabilities and the details of traumatic events. Based on colors, shapes, and other symbols, psychologists can get a better look at what is going on inside children's minds, thanks to the creation of crayons.

Psychological Analysis
Art trends are constantly changing. Today, crayons are
used in more ways than just coloring pictures. Crayons have become a new form of art and are used for melting (8) , sculpting (9), and creating works of art.

Present Day Impact
The use of crayons for psychological analysis
has greatly impacted the present day. Psychological analysis wasn't something we were previously able to do. Crayons have allowed us to analyze and see into the minds of children.

Individual and Social Driving Forces
All of the new and innovative forms
of crayon art are the social and individual driving forces of the crayon. They have allowed crayons to be used for more than just their intended use of coloring pictures and have drove people to find more and more ways to use them and have allowed more individuals more creativity in
all ages.

Crayons and coloring help develop hand-eye coordination in children by teaching their minds to move their hands in a way that stays in the lines. Coloring with crayons also improves motor skills from the motion of coloring and helps develop the muscles in the hands and wrists that allow them to lift objects. Fine motor skills are also improved by coloring which help children write and manipulate small objects.

Crayons in Everyday Life
Crayons are used in many everyday places and do not only help with promoting early development in children. Crayons are used in homes for the entertainment of children. They are used in Primary Schools and Daycare Centers as a learning tool. Crayons are also used in places like Police Stations and Counseling Offices to help aid with psychological analysis.

Conclusion
The crayon has socially, environmentally, and politically impacted the world. It has had both positive and negative consequences that have helped make it the best and safest that it can be. The crayon changed the way children grow. It isn't only used for coloring, but the crayon has also sparked the creation of new and alternative forms of art and promoted early development in children. The crayon has drastically evolved color and has helped enable psychological analysis.

Crayons and the Internet
Since their first release in 1903, many things have affected the crayon. One thing that has affected the crayon is the internet. The internet has created memes to make children and crayons, which aren't generally funny, a humorous topic.
