Realism and Ethan Frome
Transcript of Realism and Ethan Frome
What is realism?
Realism is the quality or fact of representing a person, thing, or situation accurately or in a way that is true to life or "the faithful representation of reality"
Realism is a technique in writing that tends to stray away from romance. It usually depicts a realistic situation with a fictional storyline and characters.
Realism In Literature
Realism is commonly seen in writing today. rather than focusing on a big plot, realism tends to emphasize personal struggles with moral and ethical issues.
Realism will give you a close representation of reality with little drama. It uses a tone of writing that is not poetic but more "matter of fact".
Examples of Realism
There are many examples of realism in literature. Most examples of realism are about moral conflicts. Examples of other types of realism include realistic problems that represent problems in reality. Characters in the story develop in a similar way to how people would develop in reality. Events are usually reasonable, and put great amount of emphasis onto the class system.
Realism in Ethan Frome
Ethan Frome is a good example of realistic literature because the plot involves a major ethical problem. Ethan is married to Zeena, but is really in love with Mattie. Ethan must choose between being happy with Mattie or moral with Zeena. Ethan From is also an example of realistic literature because it is more character based rather than having a plot filled with action. A final reason supporting realism in Ethan Frome is the emphasis of Ethan's struggle in the lower class.
