Using Evidence in Your Writing Will...
Add concrete examples
Provide support to back up claims
Help to explain your reasoning and thoughts
You know how to Infer!!!!
What the text says + What you already Know = An Inference
Let's try a text I've read...
" 'It's the memories of the whole world,'he said with a sigh. 'Before you, before me, before the previous Receiver, and generations before him.'

Jonas frowned. 'The whole world?' he asked. 'I don't understand. Do you mean not just us? Not just the community? Do you mean Elsewhere, too?" He tried, in his mind, to grasp the concept. ' I'm sorry, sir. I don't understand exactly. Maybe I'm not smart enough. I don't know what you say 'the whole world' or 'generations before him.'i thought there was only us. I thought there was only now."
Lowry, 77-78
What is going on here?
What job are the main characters supposed to accomplish?

How do these characters feel?

Describe the personalities of the characters.
"Jonas stood for a moment beside his bike, startled. It had happened again: the thing that he thought of now as 'seeing beyond.' This time it had been Fiona who had undergone that fleeting indescribable change. As he looked up toward her going through the door, it happened; she changed. Actually, Jonas thought, trying to recreate it in his mind, it's Fiona in her entirety. It seemed to be just her hair. And just for that flickering instant.
Lowry, 90
What is textual evidence?
Let's try another, only this time in PARTNERS! :)
What do I need to do in order to make a textual citation?
Example
Text Shows:
The young alien
with his head down
tears brimming in his
eyes and his lip
quivering.
+
I Know:
When people are upset,
they display those
behaviors. Also, he was
failing miserably at his task just before he started to do those things.
=
Inference:
The young alien was upset that he
couldn't abduct the man correctly,
causing him to cry a mope.
It Says. I Know.. Inference...
Make a logical inference based on the passage below. Cite text evidence to support your inference.
" Check the map again, will you?" prompted Jim as he glanced out the rear view mirror to switch lanes.

Paul shot him a devilish glare. "I know how to read a map, Jim." he snapped.

" I'm not saying you don't know how to read a map. I am just asking you to check again. Just in case."

Paul sighed deeply and pulled a crumpled paper from the glove compartment. "it says," he emphasized, "That after getting off the interstate, you turn left and go straight for five miles."

That's impossible. We've gone ten miles by now. Let me see it."
