Summary

Rump is a story about a 12-year-old boy whose mother died during his birth. Before she died, she whispered into his ear his full name "Rumpelstiltskin", but was only able to say the beginning of the name to her mother and therefore he was named 'Rump'. His name became the joke of the village because there your name is your destiny.

Summary continued
Rump's only friend is Red Riding Hood. He finds an old spinning wheel that had belonged to his mother and discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. Red warns him that magic is dangerous and she is right. Pixie's can sense gold and they want him to spin for them. Rump wants to break the spell and stop spinning straw into gold so he runs away - while on the run he finds trolls, poison apples and a wicked queen.
Character Discussion
Rump
- main character, stopped growing at age 8, able to spin straw into gold, he can't make the deals he wanted because of the magic
Red
- Rump's best (only)friend, protects Rump from bullies, helps Rump out with his magic trouble
Oswald the Miller
- evil, greedy, fat person who cheats everyone; gives Rump food for the gold
Opal
- a dumb person, greedy like the miller(her father), only reason she becomes queen is because the King thinks she can spin straw into gold

Theme
Two major themes stood out to me:
Kindness
Destiny

Kindess is shown by Rump when he tries his best to protect Red from being hurt by the Miller

Destiny is a theme because Rump has to overcome his ability to spin straw into gold and make his own destiny
Conflict
The major conflict is Rump's ability to spin straw into gold and most of the other characters want to use him to get rich. The other characters are willing to cheat, lie and mistreat Rump and Red to get the gold.
Climax
The climatic moment in Rump occurs when the queen guesses his name and the magic holding the baby to him is broken. He realizes he has the power to change things so he saves Red from Oswald the miller and makes it impossible for anyone to have the gold he spun.
Should others read??
Yes I think other people should read this book. Reading is not my favorite thing to do and I still enjoyed Rump. The characters are interesting and I found myself really rooting for Rump to come out on top.
I like that the author uses an old fairytale and puts a twist on the story.
