War of The Ghosts (1932) Bartlett's Study: Aims of the Experiment: Example of Bartlett type Experiment Results Participants added their own interpretation of certain aspects that they may have seen as unimportant or incoherent
On average, the story was reduced from 330 words to 180 - This process is known as leveling.
They made the story fit their cultural understandings
They changed terms and words to make them more familiar to their cultural background eg "canoes" became "boats Memory is not a passive system but an active processor of information
Memory recall is effected by our previous knowledge, which is influenced by our cultural background and past experiences which have helped to build our schemata
These schemata aim to help us to assign meaning to information
Memories are not simply copies of information but rather reconstructions Distortion Assimilation: The story became more consistent with the participants’ own cultural expectations - that is, details were unconsciously changed to fit the norms of British culture.
Leveling: The story also became shorter with each retelling as participants omitted information which was seen as not important.
Sharpening: Participants also tended to change the order of the story in order to make sense of it using terms more familiar to the culture of the participants. Conclusions Educational Implications In order to activate schema in students minds, we must provide them with information that is relevant
This is because schema decides what information is taken notice of - Relevant information is processed while irrelevant information is often ignored
We may also find it useful to try and modify existing schemata - we can do this in two ways (according to Piaget):
Assimilation: new information that fits into a existing schema is added
Accommodation: existing schemata are modified in the face of new, conflicting information
Bartlett's experiment aimed to see how schemata would affect participants retelling of a Native American story
Bartlett wanted to prove that memory was an active process rather than a passive recorder of information.
If schemata is used to shape memory processes, this should show in the retelling of the story
